STOCKHOLM: Sweden asked India on Thursday to clarify how Swedish-made weapons wound up in Myanmar in breach of EU sanctions, after it was revealed the Indian army had purchased the arms, Trade Minister Ewa Bjorling said.

The announcement came a day after Sweden’s export control agency said it was investigating the arms presence, a probe Bjorling said had already borne fruit.

She told parliament that the Swedish Agency for Non-Proliferation and Export Controls (ISP) had informed her that the arms came from India.

“And as a result I asked ISP to request clarification from the Indian authorities,” Bjorling said.

Pictures taken by a Myanmar freelance photographer and published in the Swedish media this week show a Carl Gustaf M3 anti-tank rifle and ammunition left behind by Myanmar government soldiers.

The weapon’s serial number is clearly visible in one of the photographs.

The European Union has had a weapons embargo against Myanmar since 1996.

On Wednesday, an ISP spokeswoman said it was “relatively unusual” for Swedish weapons to end up in the hands of third parties.

Money money.

Win-win situation for Indian Army generals and Myanmarese brothers:tup: But bad for EU/Sweden and
bad for India's image of non-proliferation:(

It proves Indian involvment in Myanmar and thats why we had seen uncalled for offending by Indians on this very forum as well whenever Myanmar is discussed

Its very premature to link India's behind-the-curtain arms supply to the behaviour of Indian members
on a public discussion forum.

Every country from US, China, India etc are involved diplomatically, militarily and economically.

Is it wrong or is myanmar some terrorist banned outfit, not a country?

myanmmar is not a terrorist nation.

If the sale of Swedish arms to India was accompanied by a non-proliferation clause, then it is wrong.

This article mentions a picture of a SINGLE weapon being found. One weapon could have found its way to Myanmar in any number of ways. It could have been smuggled into the country by any number of rebel groups that are active across the borders of both countries.

I think the Swedes are jumping to conclusions. A professional investigation has to take place in order for the truth to be found.

I can underdstand your interest since Myanmar shares an important border with you :) but supplying arms in violation of international laws to a country that borders your four troubles NE states is not a wise step.

Myanmar already uses the Carl Gustav, so what would they need India for.

Yes this is very much possible BUT again how the Indian weapons slipped into hands of the rebels?

Maybe we loaned a few .

Military assistance is negligible between Indo- Myanmar when u consider Myanmar -China honeymoon during the military juntas golden ages.

The media caught hold of a picture of a single gustaf gun and ammo... it could be from anywhere, world is vast ,

World is never enough and tommorow never dies. If somebody has a licence to kill whether its skyfall or he is at her majesty's secret service carrying a gold finger, the person is destined to die another day in quantum of solace nomatter what.... you only live twice.
