to clean varanasi and the river there...

1. put a quota on number of pilgrims... only 10,000 per year.
2. demolish most structures within 500 meters of the river, especially the ghats.
3. after demolishing, ask foreigners to design the riverside.
4. ban holy bathing in the river and the burning of the dead by riverside and subsequent throwing into it.
5. ban people from coming to varanasi and dying there.
6. any hindu wanting to put the ash remains of their dead should be given a special place with a pipe that almost touches the river bed... it is into this pipe that the ash be poured.
7. better rename the city.

the river wasn't created by some culture, it is a natural formation... so any pollution it has is because of the culture that gave it this particular cultural attachment, without thinking that their mysticism is destroying the river and polluting the waters it goes into.

unless these steps are employed, varanasi and the river will remain filthy until india exists.

Wah Jihadi wah

Allah hu Achkbar. In other words,

1. Do not give freedom to All Hindus to visit their Holy place.
2. Destroy Hindu Religious and Heritage structures
3. Repeat of Foreign Invasion
4. Destroy Hindu culture and Rituals
5. Deny Hindus the right to practice their religion
6. Do not allow Hindus to take a dip in their holy River
7. Remove any Trace of its holy, Ancient and historic significance.

Smooth, I thought you took more efforts to hide your Jihadi tendencies. You are coming undone mullah. :P

I dnt consider steps leading to ganges as heritage symbols...atleast a new granite has to be laid dwn on those stairs in order to make them look good
i don't think the stones are the problem, the main problem which spoils the beauty of the structures are painting the walls with lime and distemper and the writing on the walls describing the ghats are very ugly and shabby, they should all be washed, and a professional painters should be employed to depict them artistically, and the broken slabs of granite should be replaced,

. .
Polished Granite is slippery, NOBODY puts Smooth polished stones next to a Pool or River or even in the Bathrooms. What happens when people slip on the wet granite and fall down and break their hips ? Heads ? Ribs ?
.

There are anti skid tiles that are being used in the bathroom.

It is true Bihar and UP are effectively the "wild west" with an abysmal law and order situation BUT it is also true that these are by far the most populous states in India (UP alone has almost the entire population of the US) and whilst these states remain backward all of India will remain so. It is up to the GoI to take the initiative and bring about a suitable development model in these states because their state governments are totally incapable of doing so and are by and large inept.

These states have been recording some of the highest growth figures of Indian states in recent years (albeit from a very low base) so there may be some hope...

Another irony is that our so called demographic advantages are in these states ,means totally unskilled people.

They are Heritage structures. It was build more than 300 to 2000 years ago :disagree:

Do you know how many people visit the river banks EVERYDAY ? How many of them are OLD people ?

Those stones are Rough for a reason.

Steps being constructed years ago dsn't make them any heritage.. they hold nothing significant for kashi.. it is the temples of kashi that are heritage sites... I would still recommend those steps to be replaced... Not all tiles are slippers, there are many non slippery tiles within the market... If not for tiles they could use granite( not a smooth polished one )/monarch stone which are not slippery and are pretty rough...

personally I would like to see a flooring like this leading to the ganges...

Is it sand covering those ghats ?? how did it reach that high ?

To clean Varanasi few points to follow
1. Ban plastic all togather
2. Employ watch men, or security so that they see that the people don't throw plastic in the temple premises or the ghats
3. In Harischandra ghat an electric furnace should be installed for cremating bodies and the ashes should be handed over to the kin of the diseased.
4. A small check dam should be built to filter the filth coming to the city from the upper stream.
5. Throwing of dead animals in to the river should be prohibited.
6. A separate place should be earmarked for the bathing of women
7. Prohibit people from shitting, pissing or spitting on the banks or in to the river, fine them or take a photo of them and display it
8. For shaving of heads a separate place or building should be built, like in Tirupathi and ban shaving heads on the banks
or ghats.
9. Diverting the city municipal waste waters to the lower streams and install water treatment plants before allowing the
water in to the river

systematic steps need to be followed yes the walls surrownding the ghats to be painted and a strict ban needs to be implemented on any advt. paints on the walls... even most of the temples need to be repainted... unnecessary structures that are built on ghats whoch have no significance need to be razed down... and then steps need to be taken to clean ganga...

I see nothing wrong with his suggestions. Culture has to be altered slightly to accommodate the vast numbers. Muslims use the same concept to manage their holy cities.

The Ganga drains more himalayan silt every year than all other rivers of the world combined. the Ganga drains twice as much silt as the amazon does. the only reason bangladesh exists is due to this silt.
