More than 80 percent of respondents to a recent China Youth Daily survey suggest tightening management on electric bicycles.

The survey was released Tuesday. Of the 2,008 people it polled, 63.5 percent have electric bicycles.

Nearly 90 percent of those interviewed said improper behaviors are common among riders, including going too fast (56.5 percent), running red lights (52.6 percent) and driving in the wrong direction (52.3 percent).

A total of 64.4 percent of the respondents want better policing, while 59.3 percent suggested riders should be registered.

Zhao Jie, director of the Urban Transport Institute with China Academy of Urban Planning and Design, said though electric bicycles use should be encouraged among the public, management should be strengthened to reduce accidents.

My inputs:

I have found these electric Bicycles ( that in most cases could pass off electric scooters) to be wonderful . For a non Chinese it is God sent as they qualify as bicycles hence things like Licence, registration , helmet etc are not necessary.

One can take them anywhere a bicycle is permitted , even along footpaths & park them even in front of Cafes & shops.

It gives a wonderful sense of freedom at virtually no cost with the added benefit of not having to look for a cab late in the evening or during ' shift change' hours of Cab Drivers.

One does have to be careful in traffic yet these are wonderful rides so long as one has a good readable map to find your way around.

These battery operated machines are the answer to so much of the polloution problems we face in South Asian cities.

Electric bikes themselves are great, but the bikers have little regard for traffic rules and often run into pedestrians or other motor vehicles. I think stricter traffic law enforcements is the better solution to the problem than banning the electric bikes altogether.

Restrict the size and power of the model sold. I owned two escooter. They are great and can be stored in car booth, hand carry and even bring into metro train. Electric bike is too big and fast. Although the range is much longer and distance it can go is further.
