Sugar Mill mafia is trying to blackmail govt again.

They are saying that they will not open sugarcane crushing until Govt raises sugar price or gives subsidy or decreases sugar cane price.

The sugar cane crushing which would have opened by this time of the year has still not started.

My advice to govt is that this is the November crop time and crop can hold till February but mill owners cannot stay united for this long as expenses will kill them and one by one they will open so let them play the wait game and don't give into their blackmail.

Killing your own farmers is not a great Idea. Farm Subsidies are common even in west. Obviously not every demand can be met but there is always a middle way.

Farmers don't have any sugar union the price of cane is decided by govt or mills. Farmers just switch to different crop next season if mills pay low. So it is govt and mills to decide and mills are trying to take govt hostage.

you cannot control both sugarcane price and sugar prices. where is factory owner going to make money ?

The last 2 years have been a disaster for farmers who have planted sugarcane because they get a pittance for their crop. However the problem for many of them is there is no alternative crop and they have no other means/ skills to earn a livelihood.

I know many ppl in our multan region who have had to burn their sugarcane crop because the rate they were receiving was r.poor.

Farmers have to modernise, many are still stuck in the 80’s mode. They need to try other crops out ...vary their crops. My Tehkedaar grows 2 crops of maize every year and to add to that he grows some rice, sugarcane and wheat which means he’s not reliant on one single crop.

Cotton has not been successful in the last few years which is a bummer because it fetches a good price.

However I know some ppl who are trying something different. One of my friends in the Muzzafarghar area is growing ‘lemongrass’ which is used for kaava in KPK and fetches a gr8 price.
Farmers need to get out of their comfort zone because the market is ever changing - what worked 20yrs ago does not mean it will work now

Farmers are indeed stuck in the 80s mode however, that has a lot to do with the fact that successive governments have been stuck in the 80s mode as far as agriculture has been concerned.

There are no new good cotton seeds being introduced. The corn seed prices are rocketing. Rice seems to have been getting some help from the private sector but newer technologies that could improve per acre yields are not being promoted or subsidised.

With wheat, the Government has basically been driving farmers away from wheat farming by making the whole process of selling it very difficult.

Farm machinery is very expensive and the Government has failed to help farmers modernise.

Most importantly, a lot of the crops have seen great fluctuations in price they fetch. It's almost turning into a gamble with most crops.

As much as 50% drop in per unit price in one year is not unheard of.

Mill owners have more staying power than farmers who have to a lot less forgiving creditors and expenses. The Government should try to find a solution to the problem asap. Hopefully Jahangir Tareen and the lot wouldn't be able influence the government too much.
