I seem to have upset a little pink of the Canadian persuasion. If you send untrained civilians into battle there a high probability they will die. A different matter all together if China had mandatory military service requirement for all civilians, like Israel. With mandatory military service comes training which dramatically improves survival and effectiveness of the combatant.

US didn't get beaten,US left the country and the incompetent government of the South lost to the Communists. Militarily,the US smashed the North and could have annihilated North Vietnam if they were to expand the war. But they didn't want to expand the war and they didn't want to escalate it to the point where China and the USSR could have a war with the US and allies.

What I said above is valid. Militarily,the US were not defeated. South Vietnam collapsed as soon as the Americans left the war and stopped actively participating. There was also the front at home,the hippies and the leftists who caused this political situation.

US lost 3700+ jet planes in Vietnam. Greek Air Force has 300 planes total. An entire generation of US planes like the F-4, A-5, etc. disappeared into Vietnam.

It lost so many planes that conventional capability in NATO areas was being severely degraded, all over a 3rd world country with 1/10 the population and 1/50 the GDP of the US.
