Strasbourg’s cross-border tram line inaugurated

A cross-border tram link between Strasbourg and the German town of Kehl was inaugurated on April 28, kicking off two days of celebrations marking the opening of the extension of Line D from Aristide Briande.

Public services will begin on April 29, with trams operating 24-hours a day for the duration of the Tramfest event.

The €93m project extends Line D through the port of Strasbourg and across the river Rhine on a new bridge to Kehl mainline station and town hall.

The extension includes three new stations on the French side of the border: Citadelle , Starcoop, and Port du Rhin.

Germany’s federal government has contributed €19m towards the €44m cost of the 1.7km German section of the line.

Services will be operated by a dedicated fleet of Alstom Citadis LRVs. The 45m-long trams have capacity for 288 passengers and are the first French trams approved under German federal BOStrab regulations covering the construction and operation of trams in Germany. They are equipped with LED lighting and full glass doors, wider seating and reserved areas for wheelchair users and passengers with strollers, in line with Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM) regulations.

Theres a similar project from Switzerland to France a tram line from Basel to St. Louis is being built at the moment.

The one from Basel to Weil am Rhein (Germany) was finished a couple years ago.
