Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken notice of some service providers are providing satellite-based internet services illegally in the country.

Official sources revealed to Business Recorder that some service providers are providing satellite-based internet services illegally, causing huge losses to the national exchequer, besides posing serious security threats.

The matter has now come in PTA’s notice, but instead of taking action; the Authority issued notices while asking for stopping the illegal services.

As per licensing framework in Pakistan, satellite services can be offered through Long Distance and International (LDI) operators after obtaining prior permission or NOC from PTA. In this regard, PTA has authorized Red Tone Telecommunication (LDI operator) for sale of YahSat satellite services in Pakistan and Thuraya satellite services through Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) only. Rest of the services, if any, are illegal and for them PTA has issued a notice.

In notices PTA issued, it has admitted that some service providers are providing illegal services, violating the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-Organization) Act 1996 and PTA’s rules, regulations. They are offering satellite-based internet and data services without proper authorization and approval from PTA.

“The service providers should stop offering these unlawful services. If they fail to do so, legal action will be taken against them. Subscribers and general public are advised not to avail such unauthorized services, and should halt such services from operators who have no NOC or authorization from PTA”, maintained in the notices.

Those pursuing satellite-based Internet facilities from unauthorized providers may face quality matters and secretarial problems. The users are recommended to get similar services from those operators which have NOC from the PTA. Service providers without NOC are not allowed to continue their services anymore.
