Professor Stephen Hawking is backing the academic boycott of Israel by pulling out of a conference hosted by Israeli president Shimon Peres in Jerusalem as a protest at Israel's treatment of Palestinians.

Hawking, 71, the world-renowned theoretical physicist and Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, had accepted an invitation to headline the fifth annual president's conference, Facing Tomorrow, in June, which features major international personalities, attracts thousands of participants and this year will celebrate Peres's 90th birthday.

Hawking is in very poor health, but last week he wrote a brief letter to the Israeli president to say he had changed his mind. He has not announced his decision publicly, but a statement published by the British Committee for the Universities of Palestine with Hawking's approval described it as "his independent decision to respect the boycott, based upon his knowledge of Palestine, and on the unanimous advice of his own academic contacts there".

Hawking's decision marks another victory in the campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions targeting Israeli academic institutions.

In April the Teachers' Union of Ireland became the first lecturers' association in Europe to call for an academic boycott of Israel, and in the United States members of the Association for Asian American Studies voted to support a boycott, the first national academic group to do so.

In the four weeks since Hawking's participation in the Jerusalem event was announced, he has been bombarded with messages from Britain and abroad as part of an intense campaign by boycott supporters trying to persuade him to change his mind. In the end, Hawking told friends, he decided to follow the advice of Palestinian colleagues who unanimously agreed that he should not attend.

Hawking's decision met with abusive responses on Facebook, with many commentators focusing on his physical condition, and some accusing him of antisemitism.

By participating in the boycott, Hawking joins a small but growing list of British personalities who have turned down invitations to visit Israel, including Elvis Costello, Roger Waters, Brian Eno, Annie Lennox and Mike Leigh.

Hawking has visited Israel four times in the past. Most recently, in 2006, he delivered public lectures at Israeli and Palestinian universities as the guest of the British embassy in Tel Aviv. At the time, he said he was "looking forward to coming out to Israel and the Palestinian territories and excited about meeting both Israeli and Palestinian scientists".

Since then, his attitude to Israel appears to have hardened. In 2009, Hawking denounced Israel's three-week attack on Gaza, telling Riz Khan on Al-Jazeera that Israel's response to rocket fire from Gaza was "plain out of proportion … The situation is like that of South Africa before 1990 and cannot continue."

Israel Maimon, chairman of the presidential conference said: "This decision is outrageous and wrong.

"The use of an academic boycott against Israel is outrageous and improper, particularly for those to whom the spirit of liberty is the basis of the human and academic mission. Israel is a democracy in which everyone can express their opinion, whatever it may be. A boycott decision is incompatible with open democratic discourse."

In 2011, the Israeli parliament passed a law making a boycott call by an individual or organisation a civil offence which can result in compensation liable to be paid regardless of actual damage caused. It defined a boycott as "deliberately avoiding economic, cultural or academic ties with another person or another factor only because of his ties with the State of Israel, one of its institutions or an area under its control, in such a way that may cause economic, cultural or academic damage"

Well, he entitled for his own opinion.

Indeed he does like we all do but it does reflect the atrocities of Israel against palestinian that such neutral genius has to take a stand to let the world know whom he side in this conflict and he must be possessing more knowledge regarding israel's aggression and future plans.

Is this democracy or dictatorship.

Genius? well he is definitely not and idiot, hes popularity is due to his ALS illness and a "miracle" that he still alive aged 71, he wrote series of books, he is a gimmick. His view in no way reflect anything but his views, atrocities? ha! no more than UK which of he is a citizen!
Neutral genius? when one make a stand he can not be neutral, you are not particularly bright say the least.
He know Israeli plans for the future? :cheesy:

Well your brightness is quite evident from your post and there is no doubt you belong to a race who will even deny sun sets in west if its against your agenda .. The whole world salute hawking for his work and here is something to bring you out of your denial..
Among his significant scientific works have been a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularities theorems in the framework of general relativity, and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. Hawking was the first to set forth a cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. He is a vocal supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.

He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a lifetime member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States. Hawking was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge between 1979 and 2009.

Hawking has achieved success with works of popular science in which he discusses his own theories and cosmology in general; his A Brief History of Time stayed on the British Sunday Times best-sellers list for a record-breaking 237 weeks.

He achieved all this with total disability and that makes him a genius and it doesnt matter what you think as whole world knows who he is.

And you very conveniently forgot to comment on this..In 2011, the Israeli parliament passed a law making a boycott call by an individual or organisation a civil offence which can result in compensation liable to be paid regardless of actual damage caused.

Is this democracy ? the freedom of speech is the basics of any democracy and all those legislation against antisemitism and such rebuttal of facts vividly indicates what israel truly is and brainwashed maniacs like you are mere pawns in the hands of a handful of cruel human shaped animals. Go get a life looser.

Now, he will be dead soon.

Well said they dint spare even US president JFK but life is in hands of ALLAH and I hope hawking lives long and stay firm against such state terror and denial of justice to poor palestinians who are being butchered like goats for decades and still Israel is the one who tries to get the label of innocent and targeted one.Height of deception and lack of humanity.

You have only posted partial account of the law, how convenient. 3

The law states that individuals or organizations who publicize a call for an economic, cultural or academic boycott against a person or entity merely because of its affiliation to the State of Israel and/or to an Israeli institute and/or to a specific region under Israeli control
The law also requires for it to be shown that the call has a high probability of leading to an actual boycott

Do you believe that Israel should do nothing against those who seek to harm them? as boycotts become a weapon to fight against Israel we are forced to defend our economy.

Well said they dint spare even US president JFK
Albatross, it seems that the description you wrote up there about sun and west fits you nicely here.

I would concede that he has a very bright mind when it comes to physics and mathematics. that doesn't mean he is bright or well informed in other unrelated subjects.
How many people have died and suffered in Syria, Myanmar, Iraq, Sudan, Eritrea, Kongo and others in the last few years? many many more dead wounded raped tortured than in Israel, even if you take the stance that the Palestinians harmlessness victims. has he boycotted any of those? how do you explain this?

Oh yeah the boycott law.

Law for Prevention of Damage to State of Israel through Boycott - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It may sound controversial i personally think it is unnecessary, but how does it contradict democracy? freedom of speech? call for boycott is beyond freedom of speech, it is a call for an act, incitement. Boycott hurt Israel so Israel is defending itself, dictatorship? it was passed by a vote in Parliament! in dictatorship there are no votes.
This law is not to prevent someone to be outspoken against government of Israel or Israel in a whole.

Im not trying to discredit Hawkings contribution but to discredit overhyped image you attribute to him which is no more than a gimmick, there are many scientist who contributed no less and more but the common man never heard of them, for example Roger Penrose with whom Stephen Hawkings received Wolf Prize in physics for Penrose–Hawking singularity theorems
,since he has decided to boycott Israel i expect from Hakwings to renounce Wolf Prize, because it is granted by Wolf Foundation in Israel, it is the only morally honest thing to do.

You have shown your intelligence, or should i say lack of it.

well , just let me tell you any scientific community or university in the world just die for half an hour speech by this gimmick and because of his condition that half an hour speech may have far less than 500 word

You can argue that mathematical briliance doesnt translate into political acumen you dont recieve these for being just a little bright.

I don't think anyone would argue Stephen's intellect or the impact he has made. I certainly don't think less of him because of the stance he has taken. Every person is entitled to their own viewpoint, and I respect that even when I don't agree someone. As far as his stance is concerned, I would like for him to expand a bit on why he has taken the stance he has. I'm sure he will sometime soon, and I am curious to see his reasoning for doing so.
