Combing e.g. Babur antiship with Azmat is probably a clever move, give the long range reach of the missile. To a leseer extent, he same would be true for the C602/YJ62. When you consider the location of Gwadar, and the extention of Pakistan's EEZ, I'm not surprised to see longer reaching missile being mounted on familiar platforms. One thing. How you rate this new development? Will this make our FAC's more lethal against enemy surface fleets etc? Is it a significant move ahead? How good is this development?
While EEZ is different from territorial waters and contiguous zone, in terms of sovereignty, Pakistan clearly has an interest in defening this area. Not in the last place also because of its own SLOCs and the amount of ship traffic through the EEZ i.e. strategic concerns.
And, possibly, also.
The distance from Gwadar, Pakistan to Muscat, Oman is just 456 km (to Sur, Oman, it is just 440km). The distance from e.g. from Keti Bandar, Pakistan to Surat, India, is 646 km and 790km to Mumbai. Having long range anti-ship missile (300-700km) for coastal defence as well as on board relatively fast attack craft (covered by land based aviaion) clearly has strategic value. Relative to the middle-east trade (and esp. oil) artery/arteries.
"Patrol vessels, as well as mine warfare and fast attack craft (all generally under 1,000 tons full load displacement) will continue to see continued investment in the Asia-Pacific region. Continued investment in these types, as well as in OPVs, reflect the increased focus on maritime security in general, and EEZ maritime security in particular"
