To be honest, i highly doubt Zardari at this critical time would want Altaf to get deep down into trouble alot more..remember how PPP supported MQM in NA-246 by-election? and What Zardari said after rangers raided Nine-Zero? "Agli bari hamari ho sakti hai.." He knows that after MQM's militant wing is gone, Rangers will come out for him and his party' militant wing's butt...

And that is precisely why these events have unfolded, or being unfolded soon after COAS visit to Karachi and his blunt warning to all terrorist (and their facilitators) elements not only in Karachi but Sindh. It is not about Altaf, it is about Rangers and Military that Zardari wants to bring on a direct collision course with MQM in order to make the ongoing operation as controversial as possible. The objective is pretty clear, to make the Rangers/Army abandon the ongoing operation so Zardari and his cahoots could save their skins.
