Right uptil now, Sri Lankans have been following an unofficial ban that prevents its citizens from singing their national anthem in Tamil.

An unofficial ban existing ever since 2010 under President Mahinda Raajapaksa when he made it clear that the government would not be pleased with those singing the anthem in Tamil, many schools and other institutions singing the Tamil version of the anthem, stopped, reported The New Indian Express.

However, new President Mathripala Sirisena will soon be sending a circular to all institutions saying that there would no ban on singing the anthem in Tamil, said the report.

In 1951, the Tamil version “Sri Lanka Thaaye Nam Sri Lanka”, was adopted along the same time that the Sinhalese-language anthem “Sri Lanka Matha, Apa Sri Lanka” was taken up as the national anthem.

In 2010, then Home Minister W.D.John Senewiratnehad introduced a cabinet paper that prevented the singing of the anthem in Tamil. However, the order was never really made official as Rajapaksa did not commit himself to the proposal, said the report.

However, it became known that singing in Tamil was not favourable with the ruling government. In Tamil regions, it was insisted that only the Sinhalese version of the national anthem be used.

Why ? The Tamil version of the national anthem was there since the 1950's, As old as the Sinhala version.. It was sung in the predominantly Tamil area's till 2010.. Why did'nt you call for the end of all those governments till 2010 ?? Were you born only after 2010?

And the Tamil version sings the Sri Lankan national anthem not a song on Eelam.. Where does the West come in to this ?

Permission to sing it in Tamil does not mean they're going to alter Sri Lanka matha ? Or sing the Tamil version at International and national events.. They didnt till 2010 when the moronic MR govt banned it to create unwanted controversy, So why should they do it now ?

Do you want the Tamil speaking people excluded from the Sri Lankan identity ? If your' told to sing Sri Lanka matha in Tamail, Would you understand it ? Would you feel the same pride you get when you cant even understand the meaning of the words ? So what is so bad for Tamil speaking Sri Lankns to feel proud of their country thier nation in a language they understand ? After all it's just a translation of Sri Lanka matha

Multiple language theory doesn't suit for the national anthem.
Why can't we all stand up for one like India.

.
Does SL have its national anthem in two languages ?

Yes it does.. Though i'm not advocating one for Sri Lanka, Because the two versions stood side by side for 60 years without nobody even noticing it.. And because it will complicate things

Multilingual national anthems

South African.. In 5 languages

New Zealand in Maori and English

Belgium in French, Dutch and German

Philippines in Tagalog, Spanish and English

Suriname in Dutch, Sranan and Tongo.

Canada in English and French

Also the Indian National anthem is in Bengali not Hindi thier predominant national language

Does SL have its national anthem in two languages ?

They have a Tamil version, That had been there since the 1950's as the same time the national anthem was created.. It was rarely used and occasionally sung in Tamil area's.. But then in 2010 the MR regime for reasons best known to them banned it being used creating unwanted controversy.. The rest of the dumb f@cks have got excited now because that ban is being lifted

This was a request made by former ealamist mano ganeshan.
By encouraging these type of Tamil nationalism, Colombo will surely lose the control of Northern council.
Rather than promoting domestic languages, it is beneficial to promote a mutual understandable language.

Eelamist or not it was restored, Not created.. Two different things.. The ban was anyway not constitutional.. Again where were you before 2010 ?

Anyway making such a fuss for such a mundane thing, Like frogs in a well

Btw Mano Ganeshan is a Colombo based politician, He has nothing to do with the Northern provincial council

I'm not making any fuss and just want to have discussion on it as it is quite a hot topic in these days.

what about allowing to sing the national anthem in ENGLISH

Marikkar Wednesday, 18 March 2015 12:59
This is just a matter of pleasing a particular community which has no common or specific interest towards Mother Lanka. I personally believe that the national anthem should be sung only in one language.

Why the hell SL need two national anthems when Tamils gonna sing the Sinhalese one at International and national events? Can't the Tamils be satisfied of the single anthem? Are they ashamed of Sinhalese altogether?

Tamils should first realize that Sri Lanka's majority is Sinhalese and Sinhalese are the dominant factor in decision making. Then there should be no confusion and guilty feeling singing the Sinhalese anthem. India has a one national anthem and it is sung in Bengali language. No one has ever complained about they can't understand Vanga hence they do not know the meaning of the anthem. It is a utter shame if some one says so. Tamils don't need stupid acts like the OP to feel proud about the country.

Keep in mind. National anthem is as pure as the country itself. If someone molest it, that is a offence as grave as molesting the country.

Who ever did it before and when ever it happen. That is wrong. Sri Lanka only need one national anthem.

I doubt, if it won't provide an up-rise to tamil nationalism. Then Hypocrites like Vigneneshwaran may get utter benefits.
They shouldn't have touched nationalistic elements in these 100 controversial days.

Sirisena is doing what he spouse to do to console his supporters during the last election. He value Tamils and Muslims more than Sinhalese.

He is not a strong leader as enough. Sadness is his actions hit not only himself but also for the country as well. Who knows, opposition might get a chance because of that.

Sri Lankans should put all the Tamils on a boat and send em to Tamil Nadu, this seems to be the solution to all sri lanka's problems.
