The Puttalam Lakvijaya plant will add 300MW of power to the national grid tonight (July 26). Power cuts affecting several areas will be discontinued as a result tonight, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) stated.
Aug 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka's power authorities have once again imposed island wide power cuts due to a breakdown occurred at the Lakvijaya coal power plant at Norochcholai on Wednesday.
Power cuts lasting 2 hours and 15 minutes will be imposed on 58 major towns in the island and surrounding areas, including Colombo city area, during daytime tomorrow (Aug 09), the Ceylon Electricity Board said.
The towns are in four different zones and each will experience the power cut at a different time. Power suspension if the first zone will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
The power generation at Lakvijaya plant has automatically stopped due to a technical fault in the generation system. The generator has automatically shut down due to an accidental breakdown of the main transmission line running from Lakvijaya power plant to Veyangoda.
The national grid has lost 300 megawatts of power due to the shutdown of the plant.
Measures to restore the system by a group of engineers are in progress and power plant would be restored back to normalcy soon, the officials said.
