what is your experience with .22 rifle?
I still dont own one. I want to make my first purchase of long range bolt action hunting/ target rifle.
the web gives me information overload apart from our family Enfield and rifle 5 we dont have anything else in this class. we can move this discussion into a new or other thread if there is one about rifles that civilians can own.

I have a Marlin 795 Semi Auto chambered in .22 LR. It's a decent inexpensive rifle, Micro Rifling helps the accuracy. Out of the box it i found it more accurate than the Ruger 10/22.

This is how it groups at 75 yards - Open Sight.

For Long range shooting solution, what calibers are available for you and what ranges are you looking for?

keeping myself to .22 nice shooting there. by the way
I would go for bolt action for accuracy of subsonic rounds and economy as well :)

to start off I am looking at about 50 to little over 100 meters give or take . looking for a small game rifle which I can also use against the field vermin/ pests (foxes and pygmy hogs etc). I have always used open/ iron sight rifles, my scoped experience stops at air rifles. I would like to buy a 10x scope to ensure a humane kill (of hogs, rabbits & foxes I mean)

living mostly in the cities and Father being a strict law abiding one meant there was never a chance to own anything exotic or very expensive (he even had our British decommissioned).

going forward something customizable re magazine, free floating the barrel and better scopes .. but thats for future.
I liked Merlin reviews by the way in addition to much known namers.

.
No need for it to go bang. Machetes, hunting knives, folding knives, safety gear, first aid kits, off road vehicles, cleaning kits, etc are welcome too.

Here is my usual setup:

Good to know.

.22 LR in bolt action.

I have heard very good things about the Savage Mark II. you have the option of getting a 16.5" Bull barrel for the FV-SR model.

Marlin XT22 has a 16" Barrel and comes with the same 795 Micro Grove rifling giving it unprecedented accuracy.

and then there is the CZ model, I think it's called 452 or something, those are well known as very solid performers.

these three might be a good place to begin all three are in the range of $200-500.

That is really nice. How do you like your FJ cruiser? also tell us more about your bikes. I have a Xterra Pro4x for offroad stuff.

The FJ is really nice off -road and in deep snow. Its only downfall is poor three-quarters visibility. The off road bike I use is a Kawasaki KLR650E with an SW Motech skidplate, Kreiga ALP luggage, Denali D3S lights and a tall windscreen, nothing special. It could use a better aftermarket suspension since the stock one is too soft.

The Nissan Xterra is a vary comparable vehicle and a good choice too. What year?

should we include our "bug out bags" too?

I am thinking of our off the hook ready to go kit for any off road adventure (planned or unplanned)

My Xterra is a 2011. I bought it in 2012 with 18K miles on it. Although I was originally looking for a 4runner, those dang things are pretty difficult to find used with low mileage. The funny thing I turned in my 08 Xterra 2wd for the pro4x. the 08 was my first car in US, and was not meant for the wilderness at all. That thing had 265 horses going to rear wheel, made it a tail happy boar.

Other camping gear:

Redvers Expedition Tent
LLBean Down sleeping bag
EMS self-inflating ground pad

That's about it. It can all fit on the bike, plus basic food and first aid supplies. The only problem left is finding the time to go camping. :D

The 4runner has the same chassis and drivetrain as the FJ. People tend to hold on to them long term. My FJ is over 8 years old already.

from childhood memory, father handed this bag to me
this was out family kit bag for all long distance excursions . based on the British military WW2 bag. although looked small but had surprising capacity. it would include essential medicines like pain killers & diarrhoea remedy, bandages, spirit, salt and suggar. folding knife, water bottle, cornflour sugar cane rich bread, barbecued channa daal , torch, .38 revolver & extra ammo, sewing kit and local/ regional map with marked important points.. and more I cant remember.
he would inspect it and if needed will rearrange things. if we get a chance then this summer we will do this again on our trip to our lands.

What is the approximate capacity of this bag? It sounds like pretty efficient packing, first and foremost. The backpack that I use is 20 liters and plenty for my purposes.
