Seoul (CNN)South Korea's Prime Minister Lee Wan-koo offered to resign on Monday amid a growing political scandal.
Lee will stay in his official role until South Korean President Park Geun-hye accepts his resignation. He has transferred his role of chairing Cabinet meetings to the deputy prime minister for the time being, according to his office.

Park heard about the resignation and called it "regrettable," according to the South Korean presidential office.

Calls for Lee to resign began after South Korean tycoon Sung Woan-jong was found hanging from a tree in Seoul in an apparent suicide on April 9. Sung, who was under investigation for fraud and bribery, left a note listing names and amounts of cash given to top officials, including those who work for the President.

Lee and seven other politicians with links to the South Korean President are under investigation. A special prosecutor's team has been established to investigate the case.

Lee had adamantly denied the allegations as the scandal escalated: "If there are any evidence, I will give out my life. As a Prime Minister, I will accept Prosecutor Office's investigation first."

Park has said that she is taking the accusations very seriously. Before departing on her trip to Central and South America, she condemned political corruption in her country.

"Corruption and deep-rooted evil are issues that can lead to taking away people's lives. We take this very seriously."

"We must make sure to set straight this issue as a matter of political reform. I will not forgive anyone who is responsible for corruption or wrongdoing."

Park is in Peru and is expected to arrive back to South Korea on April 27.

:(:disagree:

But at least they are offering to resign whereas here in PH, politicians will lie to their teeth and would resort to blame-game.

Hmm! Very true!

I must admit, I do respect and revere the honor of the late Sung Woan-jong, who took his own life after his involvement in the scandal. Men like these, who may have erred , but are strong enough to give recompense through suicide , are more respectable than the average wretch who goes into hiding with a thick face.

The previous Korean president, Roh Moh-hyun, also salvaged some honor by commiting suicide after his corruption case was made public.

If you kill yourself, all you're doing is kill yourself. It takes a second of courage to commit suicide, but a life time of courage to continue the struggle.

I say this is a cultural thing, but almost none of the Imperial Japanese generals killed themselves, in the end, it's just propaganda, much like war itself. Who in their right mind would trade a woman, a comfortable bed, fast wifi and coffee in your own house for years of sleeping on the ground with men and getting shoot at, and not in the fun way.

These guys didn't honor, he was corrupt, except now, he's a coward and a moron too.

At least , in the case of the one committing suicide, he atones for his sins and this is seen in social context. It takes strength of character to not only realize the wrongs he or she made, and decide on a course of action to ameliorate that error, that failure in moral virtue. Suicide to restore honor is actually a reality in Japan, Korea, and also in China. Any guilty wretch can be found of corruption, and live in relative anonymity and comfort if he or she has accumulated enough ill-gotten wealth. But those who choose to restore some semblance of honor by committing the sacrifice --- are giving up even the simple pleasures, comforts.

Years back I was once a witness to the giving and receiving of bribes through an innocent parting handshake。

A cheque for an unknown sum was the “gift” from the owner of a major construction company to a member of Parliament。:enjoy:

This is an inherent evil of East Asian societies. These so called "gifts" for favor. It should be extinguished.

I'm sure honor means a lot when you're dead. Romanticizing these things is the exact reason terrorists exists. Somehow, foiled terrorists that was captured and not forced into or egged on again, never tries it again.

I was borne in China, I know exactly what propaganda sounds like.

First it doesn't just happen in East Asia.

These topics are too broad. I'll just leave it you with 水至清则无鱼,人至清则无友.

Better to be dead and not have to deal with the shame for all one's life.

There is a saying in Japanese, "Duty is heavier than a mountain, but death is lighter than a feather."
