South Korean premier arrives on 4-day visit to Pakistan from Sunday

South Korean Prime Minister Chung Hongwon will pay a four-day visit to Pakistan from Sunday at the invitation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

This will be the first visit by a South Korean prime minister to Pakistan since 1983.

Besides his meetings with President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Chung Hongwon will be the chief guest at Pak-Korea Investment Cooperation Forum.

Korea commended for working towards joint cooperation for building shipyard

ISLAMABAD, April 8 (APP): Federal Minister for Defence Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain Tuesday commended Korean efforts for working towards joint cooperation for the second shipyard to be built in Pakistan. He made these remarks while talking to Ambassador of Korea, Song Jong Hwan who called on him here in his office. The Minister has been keenly supporting the project and had undertaken a visit to China to assess the features and feasibility of a deep sea shipyard, adding the work on second shipyard is being done speedily and rigorously and after some important and final deliberations the project will be in full serving.

South Korean PM to visit Pakistan tomorrow

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, Mr. Chung Hongwon, is scheduled to visit Pakistan from Sunday, April 13, on a four-day official visit to the country.

This will be the first visit to Pakistan by a prime minister of the Republic of Korea since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1983, foreign office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam told Dawn.com.

During the visit, Mr. Chung Hongwon will call on the president and prime minister of Pakistan on Monday.

The South Korean leader will speak on Monday at the Korea-Pakistan Investment Cooperation Forum in Islamabad jointly organised by the Pakistani Board of Investment and Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) where he would highlight the potential of trade between the two countries.

Relations between Pakistan and the Republic of Korea have broadened in various fields over the years.

The foreign office spokesperson said the bilateral trade figure of US $1.341 billion shows the growth of economic and trade ties between the two countries.

She said both Pakistan and Korea enjoy excellent trade and commercial ties and several Korean companies are investing in Pakistan in the areas of chemical industry, hydel and thermal power and infrastructure projects.

There is also a significant Pakistani labor class working in various cities of South Korea.

“This visit offers opportunities to both countries to exchange views on wide ranging bilateral, regional and international matters of mutual interest.

“The two sides will also discuss ways and means for further strengthening cooperation in diverse areas, particularly in expanding bilateral trade and enhancing investment in Pakistan,” the spokesperson added.

Pakistan seeks free trade agreement with South Korea

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif proposed a free trade agreement to South Korean Prime Minister Chung Hongwon during their meeting in Islamabad on Monday as both countries signed two Memorandum of Understandings (MOU) on trade, industry and energy.

It is my government’s resolve to strengthen and expand relations with the Republic of Korea in all fields, Nawaz said.

Hongwon during their one-on-one meeting said that Pakistan and Korea should expand their trade, economy and energy sectors and enhance bilateral relations by increasing personnel exchanges in the private sector.

A press release from the Prime Minister’s office stated that the premier had proposed a comprehensive free trade agreement that aims to boost trade between the two countries beyond the 2012 level of $1.6 billion.

Nawaz also appreciated the ‘Joint Business Forum’ organised by Korea Trade Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and the Pakistan Board of Investment and expressed hope that as a result Korean companies would engage in the energy, infrastructure development, railways and telecommunication sectors in Pakistan. Citing the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway, he stressed upon the need to prepare a Country Partnership Strategy between the two countries for the next three years.

The premier highlighted the various investment opportunities for Korean businesses in Pakistan especially in the energy sectors of hydel, wind, solar, biomass and coal power generation.

The Gaddani Power Park and the Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park initiatives and the construction of off-shore and on-shore LNG terminals were also highlighted. The premier also invited Korean financial institutions to start operations in Pakistan.

Nawaz thanked the Korean government for hosting 900 Pakistani students and expressed the hope for of further scholarships being offered to Pakistani students.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif headed a delegation-level meeting with Republic of Korea Prime Minister Chung Hongwon at the PM House, which included the Korean Ambassador to Pakistan Dr Song Jong-hwan, Korean vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Cho Taeyul, Korean vice Minister for Trade and Energy Han Jinhyun, Minister for Commerce Engineer Khurram Dastagir, Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, and Advisor to PM on National Security Sartaj Aziz among others.
