South Asia 2030

Ok so i am a farmer i did spray in 20 minutes and then what to do ? Sit under the tree watch ? Why world is so in hurry ?

It will mean job losses in farming. Forcing them to get jobs in factories?

It’s called industrialisation?

Already happening in Bangladesh!!!

Farmers with significant amount of land will save on hiring seasonal workers, which will in turn save money. Second, a farmer then can focus on harvesting, storing and selling his yields. And majority of farmers also owns cattle, which needs more active labor.

I opened this thread to see who were the doers and who were the whiners.

Usual suspects have put themselves in the right buckets 😂😂🤣

Like moth to flame 🔥

ohhh bhai oper waly se daro idher spray ker ke idher harvesting / storing kon kerta hai ??????????????????????? farmers have no issue of time . all they have issue of prices and subsidies land ownership water .

Bhai, only uneducated farmers does only one type of harvest in the whole farm, unless its rice or wheat or other staple crops.

A scientific approach to farming is dividing the land into many segments and plant different crops and vegetables alternatively. Doing this will make the yield more resilient to any particular types of diseases or insect attacks.

Single crop is suicidal!

Not only does it drain the soil. It incubates pests.

This is why I am against US style mega farms.

Yield might be higher but the health cost is high.

US food is full of chemicals - I avoid it like a plague!!

i have seen in punjab we have tough schedule of weather fro crops . and most of the farmers have same routine crops since ages .

Presence of pesticides and too much fertilizers are a major issue in US grown crops. I am a proponent of natural soil immunity through crop rotation.

Because sub continent ke farmers chutiye hai.

In Bangladesh this has been changing thanks to efforts from Government, NGOs and availability of internet. Farmers now are getting tech savvy and farming expensive fruits like Dragon fruit in off season. That too following organic method. They are sharing their knowledge and others are following suit.

Most of South Asia and Bengal's strength is in the soil and the hardworking people. We should never write it off completely for the sake of industrialization. Both are important for development of the region.

Exactly, farming and agriculture has huge potential and can lift India into a high-mid income group of countries. All they need is proper training. I can start a thread listing all global innovation in tech related to farming, food and food processing, sometime.

Yes definitely. But they are inefficient in growing rice, wheat, bajra, sugarcane and whole lots of other crops.

Multiple neighborhood-level vertical farms, max three stories, that use hydroponics. Built throughout the city across the country. Where was this experimented ?

Farming and spraying fertilizers/insecticides using drones, detecting plant damage using hyperspectral cameras on drones, sensor fusion is what I have in mind.

That would solve nothing really. The farms will still be open as usual to rain, storm, hailstone, snow, flood, drought, locust attack etc. Technology must be applied with prudence and broad-level thinking, not because something is there. :)

if just india could stop farmer's suicides it will be greater victory then anything else , yahan kisan ko roti chawal se fursat nhi janab ko drones or sensor feusion ki pari hai .

Indian farmers suffer from two issues:

1. They are extremely inefficient hence reliant on massive subsidies and price protection. Double edged sword meaning they cannot export to rich countries for higher markup.

2. Banyas have them enslaved through loan sharking. They do not have the Bangladeshi equivalent to BRAC or Grameen.

We must consider the fact that India has had the highest number of farmer suicides in the world. Just between 1995 and 2018 there were around 400,000 suicides. Right in this year until October there were 7000+ farmer suicides just in the one state of Maharashtra. USA also has farmer suicides. But there would have been zero farmer suicides in Libyan Jamahiriya until it existed in 2011. No farmer suicides in Cuba. In DPRK ( North Korea ) too despite that country having less agricultural land than India and certainly USA and the one existing being of difficult terrain, and additionally have been the illegal Western government sanctions since 1953. So we must consider if it is the political model of India and USA to blame.

Banana man's point# 2 is to partially answer. Since everything in India is to be obtained for money, whether healthcare or education or water or basic food or electricity or telecom or TV or transport or of course housing, and the Indian farms not only being private but also being small ( one acre to a few acres ) the farmer doesn't benefit much from the small produce. The money earned will be spent on obtaining those previously listed services plus the Indian-specific wasteful expenses on regular religious pilgrimages and of course the weddings which get compounded if the child to be married off is a female which will entail dowry in addition to the jewels that the parents start collecting almost from her birth. Add to all this maintenance of the farm - fertilizer, tiller machine or tractor, pesticide, pump repairs etc. To keep all this going the farmer takes loans from various institutions who of course lend on interest and the clock ticks relentlessly.

When there is flood, locust attack etc the farm produce is lost and this produce is the only source for the farmer's income. So from where will the farmer get money to not only repay the interest-based loans ( one farmer can take multiple loans ) but also keep the household going as even the basic necessities are to be obtained only by paying money. There builds pressure within the family, desperation to make ends meet, many daily sacrifices and dilemmas, and on top of this will be the lender's agents coming to threaten jail and the agents will ensure social humiliation. One article spoke of an agent telling a female farmer "If you are not able to repay go jump into the pond". Next day she did. :)

Indian culture is dominated by Hinduism which doesn't prohibit suicide and doesn't think of needless deaths and suffering as tragic. There are elements that encourage suicide. Right on PDF when I started to post about farmer suicides from my membership year 2014 the Hindutvadis would callously and with much apathy say "If a farmer cannot repay the loan why did he take the loan in the first place ?". From this you can imagine the environment.

So, with this social element added with the socio-economic element that surrounds totally the farmer finds himself or herself no other way out and many of the farmers are not aware so they don't reject the system and join progressive movements which may help them secure temporary economic relief and may give a new work and life direction to the farmer. "Educate, agitate, organize" is what Ambedkar told the Dalits. Many farmers who are not affiliated with the left in India don't realize such thinking and they find no way out and suicide.

Farmer suicides can span generations of a family :

The simple solution to eliminate farmer suicides in India and USA is adopt full Communism which includes abolition of money ( so no loan sharks forever ) and turn farming into a collectivized activity where a community can form groups which individually work in vertical farms distributed across the neighborhood and the city to grow multiple crops individually. Farming should become an activity of everyone instead of so-called educated people arrogantly sitting in useless technology companies like Infosys and needless finance companies like Goldman Sachs and consigning a generally socio-economically poorer section of society to doing agriculture.

Huge potential yes. In fact high priority other than space transportation, space object exploration, atmospheric aviation and human biology. But as I said above, we must just abolish money and be done with that one of the greatest diseases of humankind. A humanity without money will have no need of bracketing some countries as high income, others as middle income and others as low income and any variation of these like you present.

And you should create that thread.

Go for it! I love to learn about agricultural development.

1. In Japan they have tried small scale hydroponic farming for rice, but that was more of a research vanity project. The area required for rice/wheat farming doesn't justify making significant infrastructure. In fact, the use of significant land can be a boon for us, by implementing Agrivoltaics. Its a dual use of land, where you can farm crops as well has place solar cells on top (at a significant height from crops). Wind mills can also be implemented in a similar way. Providing our farmers a dual source of Income.

2. Most of the infrastructure for Hydroponics requires significant use of plastics, and exposing plastics to rough weather causes the issue of 'microplastic'. Which is already a major contaminant polluting our food source. I am a proponent of doing leafy vegetables, fruits in hydroponics/aeroponics.

the simple solution to hunger is that every one eats food !

the simple solution to international war and conflict is to dissolve all borders !

the simple solution to any itch is to scratch.. very simple
