Sonam Wangchuk's reaction on the ban of chinese apps

CHINA>US>East Asia>Europe >>> rest, that's always been the pattern for revenue distribution for apps etc in a general sense.

Nothing surprising in case of TIKTOK. India isn't just as profitable as you'd think.
Can you share the complete picture? For example, I want to understand what the different shades of blue mean. Or just share the link of the site from where you got this.

Even if we assume India is not as profitable, how can you predict the future? Maybe Tiktok lost on a potential market. Even single digit percentages are big when we talk about revenues of big companies. In an alternate peaceful scenario, maybe Tiktok has taken India by storm 2 years down the line (I hope it will never happen either way as it's a dumb app).

Also, Tiktok is just 1 app among the 58 other apps listed. Why are you focusing so much on Tiktok? Shouldn't there be a combined outlook? Some apps will be hit harder and some less depending on their market share. No app will be hit equally.

And this is without taking into account independent choices of Indian users henceforth while buying other things related to China. Tiktok is just a small part of it.

Dude, it's obvious though. Indians don't spend much on apps or even monetised ads have low click rates. And there's no point in debating this. after all, every thing is upto government - to think both gains and repercussions.

I remember, the different shades meant for the past 3 years.I haven't saved the site, only the pic, need to look it up again.

Sure india will get more "profitable " in next 20 years but so will be Africa,Mexico,Indonesia,SEA, western Europe and many parts of the world,China or Tiktok never depended on India in past,so it was never a loss for them.
For future,China is planning to basically create clusters of India type of Nations in africa, western Europe and South America and so on to fill the gap.

Being kept out of china's future "global trade, investment and technological network" isn't something that even the European nations want.
China will control the most efficient trade routes,China will be the future biggest investors,China will control the major patents in leading tech which no nation can do without.Every nation will likely hand china the $,¥,€.. one way or the other. So,what's the point?

Yes, Indians don't spend as much on apps but that's what we assume. Our assumption could very well be true, but the question that should arise is how less? How much less do Indians spend on apps compared to other countries? Is the difference huge?

Even if we assume that a minor proportion of Indians spend on apps, but looking at the population of India, even that number could be big as compared to other countries. 40% of 500 is the same as say, 10% of 2000 (500 and 2000 can be taken as populations).

I didn't understand what you meant by monetized ads. Some ads are forced on users and there's no option of not opting for it.

And yeah, eventually it's up to the government to take next steps.

. .
Is there any data related to that?
Why pretend there isn't? It's common knowledge and you're just posturing for the sake of it.

"This is a purely political move," Nikhil Pahwa, the editor of MediaNama, a media watchdog, told the BBC.

"I don't think it will affect the apps - maybe the number of the users [will drop] but it will only have a minor impact on [their] revenue," Mr Pahwa said.

Prove me wrong!
Are you mad? Tik Tok has around 65% Chinese customer base.

Ignoring your generalized sweeping statements, what's your suggestion as to the next step that India should take then? You can attack a country either militarily or economically. Both has its own disadvantages.

What would be your suggestion?

It's not always about revenue in the app business. Number of users matter. Given the popularity of the app in India, the drop in number of users will hurt. It's not enough to make any considerable dent in tik-tok's future but loss of a large current and potential user base will be worrying. Not to say why US cant ban this after youtube and google have been banned? India set a precedent that others can follow easily -- that's the worry!

It's still have an option to click in the end, usually redirecting to the product. That's click rate.

I'm not posturing as I haven't yet researched on that. I'm just looking up things along the way.

So there are contrasting statements in the article. Mr Pahwa mentions that it will only have a minor impact on the apps revenues. But then, immediately after a few lines there's a mention that India is the largest foreign market for Tiktok. Which of course could mean that most of the revenue generated by Tiktok could be China based itself. But as mentioned earlier, even few percentage drops in revenues is huge.

And anyway, somehow this decision has revolved around Tiktok and Chinese apps without looking at people's general sentiment towards China and its various products in the future. I'm not saying that India won't bear the brunt initially though.

A mutual compromise! That's how China-russia,china-pakistan,china-tajikistan etc etc made peace and forged friendship.
Indian political elites can't harp about attacking china and taking back akasi chin while trying to build business relationship and seeking loans from china. If chinese leaders openly spoke about attacking India and conquering their region how would India react?
Why nobody in Indias political class has an understanding about that?
China had already offered one meditation in 1960 but Nehru rejected it ,because be wasn't sure if he could've convinced the Indians about the concept of mutual compromise, too far-sighted for average Indians reared to be ultra nationalistic.
Both China and India have to reach a mutual agreeing term with mutual compromise.
India can't ask China to heed its unilateral demands and their version of history and McMahon's line which China never signed and totally invalid from China's perspective;especially when it's China that has huge upper hand.
India and China has to sit and sort their differences and reach a mutual compromise based on their own history instead of involving the British aspect.

Wow, so much of data. Anyway, here are a few quotes from the article.

'India was the number one market for downloads in 2019 (only counting iOS App Store and Google Play Store downloads), with 323 million downloads, accounting for 44% of the total figure.'

'TikTok managed to persuade the authorities that it had tightened regulations and the app duly found its way back onto the iOS App Store and Google Play Store. The ban cost the app an estimated 15 million new users in what looked set to be TikTok’s best month to up until that point in the South Asian mega nation.'

'The importance of the market to TikTok is clear. In October, it launched an education program in India – the first such initiative from the app. Certainly this suggests an app wanting to stay in a nation’s good books.'

The graph in the first link is related to consumer spending and not total revenue as a whole. Further, the article is related to gaming apps and not related to general apps so yes for gaming, China is a huge market. This is the graph that @Leishangthem had earlier incompletely posted. Thanks for sharing the link.

Another interesting chart. Tiktok and UC Browser are apparently really popular apps.

Mutual understanding is possible if China is prepared to listen. If there's no response from China, India will have to take the necessary measure. If China falls back to previous status quo i.e retreating from no man's land, then no problem.

Anyway, your posts look more like pro-China and anti-India. I suspect a fake account with fake flags.

Now I get why @Leishangthem purposely edited out the chart that he posted. This is just telling fake stories with the same data.

Dude, you look at the revenue part.

"Nonetheless, China is still biggest source of TikTok revenue through iOS users alone. $122.9 million of TikTok 2019 revenue comes from its home market; 69% of the total. The US comes in second place, with its $36 million contribution accounting for 20% TikTok 2019 revenue. The UK, contributing 2% ($2.4 million), was in third place."

Note this is only iOS revenue. For all over, I found these articles
https://entrackr.com/2020/01/exclusive-tiktok-touches-rs-25-cr-quarterly-revenue-in-india/
https://www.businessofapps.com/news/tiktok-revenues-up-310-in-q4-2019/
Overall, there is one estimate for India revenue that's 25 crore rupees - 3.3 million dollars and two estimates for global revenue in the same quarter - 50 million and 87 million. Taking the lower one for global, it turns out Tiktok had 6.6% of it's revenue from India but wanted to increase it four-fold by sept. 2020. However, also note that FB earned around 892 crores in the same quarter in India.

"If we look at Rs 892 crore Facebook revenue in India in FY19, TikTok’s earnings appear marginal. However, it is expected to catch up at a quick pace if the same trend continues. The company is expected to post about Rs 80 crore revenue in the ongoing fiscal.

While it will be early to say that TikTok will eat up the revenue of Facebook’s family of apps, experts believe that Bytedance would pose a serious threat to Facebook’s revenue in the coming years."

So, to summarise Tiktok earned at most 6.6% of it's earnings from India but the market had a lot of potential if had eaten FB and other competitors.
