The Sri Lankan military today rejected the latest Australian report which claimed that the Sri Lankan armed forces had systematically destroyed evidence of alleged mass killings during the last stages of the war in the country.

Military spokesman Ruwan Wanigasooriya told Reuters news agency that the report was baseless. He also cast doubts about the accuracy of the document's eyewitness accounts, and claims that the military removed evidence of war crimes such as mass graves.

"Do you think we could have unearthed skeletal remains which are in the villages where people are also resettled now and destroy the evidence?" Wanigasooriya told Reuters.

The report by Australia's Public Interest Advocacy Centre Ltd, a non-profit policy group, detailed witness accounts of potential war crimes such as deliberate artillery attacks on hospitals, rape, torture, sexual violence and the murder of Tamil Tiger fighters who had surrendered.

"Although violations were committed by both sides, the evidentiary material indicates that members of the Sri Lankan Security Forces (SFs) perpetrated the vast majority of alleged crimes during the investigation period," the report said.

The new report comes as the United States plans to table a U.N. human rights resolution in March against Sri Lanka, putting new pressure on Colombo to address war crimes allegations.

The "Island of Impunity" report, under the Public Interest Advocacy Centre's International Crimes Evidence Project (ICEP), cited witness accounts that torture, sexual violence and enforced disappearance continue in part today, perpetrated by the SFs on the civilian population.

It said Sri Lankan command and control structures were so well-established that, if the charges were proven in a court, it could lead to the conviction of senior military commanders and Sri Lankan government officials.

Sri Lanka has previously said that it rejects an international inquiry into the war.

SL Military rejects

Before that there was a warm up match -it was SL Vs Nepal

well not guilty might be right term to defend but innocent word with military bring laughter outa anyone...

Forces obey orders of govts I understand but "innocent"?? lol

The Sri Lankan Military were not only stupid enough to film their wartime atrocities like POW murder and rape, they were also incompetent enough to let such evidence come out in the open and into the hands of the media.

Those who claim such barbaric acts as 'innocence' should be subjected to the same innocence.

The authenticity of those films were never verified an in fact were proven to be forgeries and hence the innocence of the SL military.

But that's not what UN thinks. It has accepted the authenticity of those evidences.

The UN report on the investigation into Sri Lanka's war crimes and accountability is damning too.

It can be safely said that with such incompetence in handling such evidences, the SL Army has put itself and the position of Mahinda Rajapaksa on the firing line from the World community.

The UN never provided counter for the forensic analysis presented by the GoSL. It simply said the 'authenticity confirmed' nothing more.

Stop making empty accusation of rape. The video footage never showed anybody getting raped.

All the footage allegedly claims was extra judicial executions.

Then perhaps the counter-evidence was of such low quality that the UN did not even think it needed a rebuttal.

In one of those clips where the bodies of Isseipriya and a few other women are shown, one of the soldiers can be heard yelling that he'd still fcuk her even though she's dead. Moreover, they all show such women tied, with their clothes removed. Rape, hence, cannot be ruled out.

Killing of POWs is a war crime as well.

You cant arrest people for things they 'might do' that's not how judicial process work.

Unless you have concrete evidence of the crime, the defendant is in no way compelled to prove his innocence.

Evidently, Sri Lankan judicial process works on the basis of not admitting any evidence and then exonerating the accused for lack of evidence. An old trick that's been perfected under the Rajapakse Regime.

That's how it's supposed to work.

Clearly not in mob mentality india and your false sense of justice.

And that's why Sri Lanka is in the dock, with entities ranging from UN to US calling for accountability in such awful war-time atrocities.

Moreover, this thread is about SL military. Stick to the topic.

So you dont understand the concept or innocent until proven guilty?
Let me explain it to you.
1.Nobody has to prove their innocence, they are assumed to be innocent.
2.No person has to provide evidence against himself, (Right to prevent self incrimination, Right to remain silent).

India justice system. (aka era of witchcraft and wizardry, aka witch hunts).
1.put accused on a noose
2. tell accuse to find evidence to prove his innocence.
3. when accused cannot prove his innocence time, hang him.(assume god will allow innocent to live).

You are to preach your civility to me.
