This wouldn't have happened if Syria hadn't shot down that Turkish F4 Phantom off the coast and then being unapologetic about it giving Turkey an excuse to go looking for a payback.
On 24 November 2015, around 09:20, an aircraft of unknown nationality, which violated the Turkish Airspace in the Hatay Yayladağı region, violated the Turkish Airspace by leaving the radio call unanswered, despite being warned 10 times within five minutes.
Within the framework of the rules of engagement, the aircraft in question was intercepted by our two F-16 aircraft, which were on air patrol duty in the region, on 24 November 2015 at 09:24. Only 1 missile was fired to the unidentified aircraft that did not respond to the radio call.
On that period, planned air patrol missions were carried out on a 24-hour basis in the relevant region. And because of the constant border violations, Syria was given a note and TR announced to the world that the rules of engagement had been changed. Statements such as we were unaware, we did not know, are political lies.
Undoubtedly, the most important reason for this was the shooting down of the RF-4 aircraft, which didnt had a weapon load and was conducting radar tests in the Mediterranean, in violation of international law. Presumably, the aircraft was considered to be a SAA aircraft with a closed transponder, and the risk of bombarding the zero point on Turkish soil by any means could not be taken by TuAF.
I did not watch the whole video, but let alone the documents and information presented by the Turkish side; It seem they dramatized the whole event by ignoring most of the information even on the Russian side. This is understandable, of course, it is not common for the Russians to lose fighter jets.
But if we look at it from a strategic point of view; The Russians sacrificed a jet, in exchange for the opportunity to settle in Syria with all its might. In addition, this event also paved the way for the complete rupture of the US and Turkiye's Syria policies. In such contentious matters, it is always necessary to look at who won what, and who lose what.
