Afghan and foreign forces are reported to have crossed into Pakistan in pursuit of undisclosed targets as a military offensive appears to be spilling across the border.

The military operation started on Thursday in the Datta Khel region of Pakistan's Waziristan province, Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder said.

"Some kind of military operation is under way on the Afghan side of the border and local tribal sources have said that there is intense fighting happening close to the Pakistan side of the border," Hyder reporting from Islamabad, said.

"A skirmish was said to have taken place in bordering Afghanistan with Taliban fighters who then tried to penetrate into Pakistan.

"Local media also said that a major offensive might be on the way on the Afghan side possibly over Taliban targets."

Pakistani military officials said the reports were baseless.

Our correspondent said that it was not yet clear as to whether the skirmish was an operation aimed at targets inside Pakistan.

"The Pakistani military does not have any joint operations on its territory nor does it get involved on the Afghan side of the border, so it would appear that this is an Afghan, American, Nato operation going under way on the Afghan side of the border," he said.

"Whenever these operations take place so close to the border areas, there is confused because there is not light, it is night time so its very difficult to know what is going on."

Doubt it guys and to those who want to live under a false facade.. Our own military hasn't stepped in NW which is mostly under occupation by Taliban from Afghanistan.. So no need for false chest thumping, this report could be true or could not be

However it is unlikely that it was intentional since there isn't a clear border there and pretty much the whole area looks the same so they might have stepped over .. God knows

media has very limited access to the facts, courtesy fear of taliban, therefore, the picture portrayed is most of the times murky and hazy. there is no possibility of anyone entering through pak-afghan border these days owing to military deployment and control of the area....
as regards indian involvement in afghanistan, of course there is indian involvement in afghanistan....and why shouldn't they do it....after all they are pakistan's sincerest enemies....

KANDAHAR: Afghan officials say a shootout between Afghan and Pakistani border guards has killed one Afghan policeman in a remote southern region where the border between the two countries is poorly marked.

In the Afghan province of Kandahar, police spokesman Zia Durrani said the skirmish started shortly after dawn on Thursday and lasted for about two hours.

Durrani says the two sides engaged in sporadic shooting using rifles and firing rockets across the boundary.

Kandahar government spokesman Dawakhan Minapal says the fighting in remote Maroof district was sparked by an attempt by the Pakistani border police to construct an outpost on the Afghan side of the border.
