With the state government formally handing over the Udhampur attack case investigation to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the J&K Police, which is now assisting the probe, has detained six people in south Kashmir. Those who have been detained include two brothers working in an Air Force station for allegedly harbouring Pakistani militant Mohammad Naveed Yakub, alias Usman.

Naveed, who carried an attack on a Border Security Force (BSF) convoy along with his Pakistani accomplice on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Udhampur on August 5, was brought to Srinagar on Friday amid tight security. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Atul Goel has been designated by the NIA as Chief Investigating Officer of the case. He has previously remained SSP, Jammu and Kathua.

Sources said two brothers Fayaz Ahmad Wani and Javaid Ahmad Wani from Charsoo Tral, working as carpenters at the Air Force Station in Awantipore, were picked up during the raids that had been going on across south Kashmir since this morning.

Police sources said a shopkeeper, Fayaz Yatoo, resident of south Kashmir’s Kulgam, was on the run after his name surfaced during the questioning of the Pakistani militant. The shopkeeper had allegedly provided money to the militants during their stay in Kulgam. The raids were being carried out in Khrew, Chursoo, Awantipora, Pulwama, Kulgam and Kudhwani areas in south Kashmir, where the Pakistani militant was believed to have stayed after infiltrating from Pakistan. Those detained for questioning also included a truck driver.

“No one has been formally arrested so far, but those picked up are being questioned,” the police sources privy to the investigation said.

“Apart from over ground workers (OGWs) of the Lashkar, we are trying to identify local contacts, who Pakistani militant is naming during the interrogation,” they added. The joint teams of NIA, J&K Police and intelligence agencies are trying to gather maximum information about Naveed’s nearly two-month stay in Kashmir before launching the attack. Naveed is being questioned at the high security headquarters of the elite Special Operation Group of the J&K Police.

“Our aim is to reconstruct the whole thing and unearth the larger network of the Lashkar. We are getting various leads from him about the men who provided the group shelter and logistics,” the sources said. “The interrogators are also trying to gather information about the Lashkar’s top man in Kashmir Abu Qasim and his deputy Dujana, both Pakistani nationals, who are believed to be handler of Naveed in the attack,” he added.

The arrested militant, sources said, was having a lot of information on the Lashkar network, which the security agencies were trying to capitalise on. The sources said the recent operation in Pulwama, in which a top local Lashkar commander was killed, was also based on an input provided by Naveed after his arrest.

Meanwhile, the sources said despite resentment from the state government, the Union Government issued a notification on Friday evening asking the NIA to probe the case. The J&K Government, sources said, was initially not keen on handing over the case to the NIA. While the J&K Police had registered a case in the incident, it is likely to hand over all the case diaries to NIA investigators. The NIA, too, has registered a case in the incident.

Yup lets screw them up. We should not do it overtly we should let counter insurgents do the dirty job. Problem is some of the idiots think they can be part of crime and get away with it. Make an example of one or two rest of them will fall in line.
