I would agree with that.

No chai pe charcha but Narendra Modi will meet Barack Obama over two separate days in September, not just one. "The fact that there will be interactions over two days is a signal of the importance we place on the US-India relationship," says Obama’s National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden.

Vardarajan guesses that the two in their heart of hearts, likely have “vigorous contempt” for each other. In fact, an unsubstantiated story by K P Nayar in The Telegraph had Obama telling a closed door group of wealthy donors that he “continued to have concerns over Modi’s past.”

Whether that story is apocryphal or not, any “concerns” will be kept firmly under wraps on 29 and 30 September. That will not be that difficult. It’s a meeting, not a US Open final where one player has to emerge as the winner.

Instead the chances are both sides will strive to play up points of synergy. "There are few places in the world other than India and the US where the son of a tea-seller in a small time town can rise to be the Prime Minister or the child of a Kenyan father can rise to be president," said US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel on his recent visit to India.

For Modi’s supporters, this is not a visit as much as it’s a victory lap for him in a country which had him on a visa denial list for years. That’s why instead of the usual meet-and-greet with the community at some hall or auditorium, Modi is choosing to hold what amounts to being a “victory rally” at Madison Square Garden. While the target audience is the Indian community, its message will not be lost on his American hosts either. Modi will play rockstar on their home turf.

Luckily for Obama, the visa denial was not on his watch. Aziz Haniffa reports in India Abroad that at an 2 April fundraiser, Obama claimed he did not even know about the “visa situation.” “But this is not right and I will ask the White House staff to prepare a brief for me and I will act on it,” Obama told the donor saying he wanted to have “great relations with India.”

“Trust me, I will take care of it,” Obama apparently reassured the donor.

The fundamental difference is, as Vardarajan says, Obama “can barely bring himself to embrace the notion of America exceptionalism” while Modi is an unapologetic “Indian exceptionalist” who wants to hold India up, not as a sort of preachy non-aligned descendant of Gandhi but as a “strong India that is accorded respect by other nations, and that also pulls its weight in the world.”

Instead there will be plenty of re-warmed rhetoric about "renewed commitment" to the "special" relationship between the world’s biggest democracy and the world’s oldest democracy, just enough for both sides to call it a win-win and go home. Meanwhile for the first time ever, US companies like McDonald’s, Abbott Labs, Emerson Electric and Devry University have signaled an interest in taking part in the Vibrant Gujaratsummit which Modi will inaugurate in 2015.

That might be more significant than all the pretty speeches in Washington.

India-US meet: Can Obama look into PM Modi's eyes and see his soul? - Firstpost

WASHINGTON: India and the US should start negotiating on a free trade agreement to achieve full potential of the bilateral ties, a top Republican senator today said.

"Our governments are currently negotiating a Bilateral Investment Treaty, which is worthwhile. But why not aim instead for a Free Trade Agreement?," said Senator John McCain.

Our goal, McCain said, should be to produce a roadmap for concluding an FTA and to start negotiating it.

The Arizona senator was addressing an event at the prestigious Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a top think-tank here.

"We could then work toward India's integration into the Trans-Pacific Partnership, once it (the FTA) is finalised."

To take the relationship further, he suggested co-development and co-production of defense hardware.

"Our militaries must work more closely to sustain a favourable balance of power in key parts of the world," he said.

"It means America being willing to transfer technology to India that can make its defense acquisitions more effective, and India being able to protect these capabilities as US law requires," the Senator said.

Describing Modi's election as "once-in-a-generation mandate" delivered by an Indians are hungry for bold change, he urged the US to seize the momentous occasion.

McCain, however, admitted the difficulties Indo-US ties faced in the recent past.

He was the first top US official to meet Modi after he became the Prime Minister.

Seems to be a very important visit.

yawn, as if anyone cares. This statement is b.s tho, imagine Nawaz making a statement about Ferguson
You cant compare NS and McCain. McCain is a senator of a country which controls Pakistan's economy thru its aid and IMF. No disrespect intended but wrong comparison.

But yeah.. Ineffectual statement .. mostly sound bytes

. .
Why do they always have to bring in Nuclear Power and bla bla BS?

I mean, when has Pakistan's nuclear strength ever been compromised or even close to being that?

The amount of US Aid directly given is minimum. There is the coalition support fund, which is Pakistan's due share for WoT operations and as such was mutually agreed by USA.
There is other civilian aid under the USAID (United States Agency for International Development) which again, they give to Pakistan, because they seek to have mutually good relations with a nation that they think is their partner. USAID funds projects in various countries, not just Pakistan.

Now, IMF is an international lending agencies open to all those nations that may seek it's help in meeting the balance of payments and again, there are a number of countries that benefit from it and let's not forget India itself was once a major beneficiary of this institution, in not so distant past.

So please, cut with this 'No disrespect intended' bullshyt.

@Syed.Ali.Haider Where do I start?

a top American senator
I dont think he is that high on top

nuclear-armed country's powerful military plays a key role in its political affairs.
You cant jump in and start on BS...wait maybe being American senator gives him such privilege ..

Lets see the topic was about our politics yet he decided to drag in the nuclear-armed bit in while otherwise they prefer pointing at our education and human rights issues.. the drama kings!

Powerful military plays a role? Dude just coz someone slapped you dosnt give you the chance to BS on media...it is rather annoying how he got there without giving any background or further info....Opinions...well sadly being a senator of USA he just dragged our image even when Army hasnt slapped him yet!

alleged Pakistani spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) continues its support to the dreaded Haqqani militant network,
Huge allegation without what you demand as proof....and how did this Haqqani come into our politics? We have bigger issues but this narrow minded fool only sees this stuff?

The situation in Afghanistan
Welll now he jumps there...well, who created it? Its not a new mess its been there since 1989 or something when USSR fell!

repeat of Iraq
Who did that? Another trouble made since gulf war era....Does he realize he is just puling their own past record and covering it with a blanket called Pakistan?

McCain said a strong India, in terms of both economy and military,
Now that is exactly what "allies" do....is he still pissed about Russia?

recent events have shown that there is a very serious situation in Pakistan.
Yo brain dead person....recent events are floods + IK march ...+ Northern areas Taliban clean up...which era did he wake up from? Or when did he stop his meds?

"A nuclear power makes the situation worse," he said.
Again the phobia

"Recent events in Pakistan have emphasized that military plays a more important role in Pakistan," he said.
Where is the proof? How did he come to that conclusions? When did he wake up from his coma?

McCain said the "Kashmir situation could flare up at any time",
Great...when he feels he hasnt made a fool of himself enough he jumps into Kashmir! Last I heard Kashmir was more like drowned rather than flared!

"The stronger India is economically and militarily,
Sound like a broken tape recorder to anyone?

Is your contention that US is responsible to pay for your operations within your own country against Pakistani terrorists ?

True that all countries take monetary assistance from IMF, but lately Pakistan's survival has been dependent of IMF with bail out after bail out, without which Pakistan would have become a external debt defaulter and would have been downgraded to worse than Junk status in the bond market. To the extent that today IMF is able to dictate the fiscal policies of Pakistan. And yes, IMF is an international agency, but just like UN, when America asks it to jump, all IMF says is "how high". Same applies to IMF and Pakistan in the fiscal arena. IMF holds all the hoops thru which its making Pakistan jump every now and then..

So you see the relationship ?

and this time, due to popular demand (from you), disrespect intended ;)

I think you were side-tracked into minutiae.

The things that he said are:

1. The situation in Pakistan is very serious. (It is.)

2. The situation in Afghanistan would bear a significant impact on Pakistan. (It will.)

3. Recent events in Pakistan have emphasized that military plays a more important role in Pakistan. (It does.)

4. Kashmir situation could flare up at any time. (It can.)

Now which of these statements do you not agree with?

. .
Which recent events....and How?

If you ask me he went very incoherent in seconds :p:

1. The military has a firm control over foreign and defense policies, and it interferes with the internal politics of Pakistan to keep this control in violation of the Constitution, as everyone can clearly see with the circus going on in Islamabad.

2. Kashmir is a potential boiling point between tow nuclear armed nations, and can flare up at any time. That sounds pretty coherent to everyone.

.
McCain pup let us do what we have to do next.

I will be back at you in few days.

. .
Well US is just finding new ways to protect the corrupt & incompetent politicians & at the same time they are looking for an opportunity to stage Pakistan. If PA takes over then all the windows will be closed & US will get extremely desperate.

.
What about you and your countries intervention in Libya, Egype and Syria? Mind your own business.

.
1. The military has a firm control over foreign and defense policies, and it interferes with the internal politics of Pakistan to keep this control in violation of the Constitution, as everyone can clearly see with the circus going on in Islamabad.
You mean when the COAS refused to interfere or when he claimed on media that he wants to be no part of it?

I can see your blind hatred getting in the way....

I can also see where your phobia came in from! All the years of being fed Murrican words...

2. Kashmir is a potential boiling point between tow nuclear armed nations, and can flare up at any time. That sounds pretty coherent to everyone.
But it is not coherent as per saying in recent events....Kashmir is a few decade old case! Not recent...

This is how it seems to have been played....so Senator was asked a few words about Pakistan ...he hears the word Pakistan and throws in all he knows about it...

Like your rant about the army he threw that in (apparently that is what they teach in USA)
He knew something to do with Afghanistan (not sure he knows we share a border) but yea he threw that into the boiling pot
He threw in Iraq (its a Muslim country right...we were there I think...it prob shares a boarder with Pakistan coz the 2 always come up in news) so in it goes to boil
Oh yes Kashmir...I have heard of that one...Lets throw it in to show I know all about Pakistan....

Wait something is happening there isnt it..cant recall what ...well lets put in the word recent events...makes everyone thinks I am up to date....
