Divers have recovered the bodies of two sailors from the sunken Indian submarine Sindurakshak that had sunk at the naval port of Mumbai.

On August 14th, a series of explosions occurred on board the Russian-made submarine. The explosions were heard in almost the entire southern part of Mumbai. It took ten fire vehicles several hours to extinguish the fire. The submarine sank, killing 18 crew members.

The work to raise the bodies from the sunken sub was moving very slowly. The explosions deformed the hatches of the submarine, making it hard to access some compartments of the submarine.

A leak of hydrogen when charging the battery, or violation of safety when loading missiles are said to be the main causes for the tragedy.

NEW DELHI: Preliminary investigations have indicated that blasts on INS Sindhurakshak submarine were caused by "possible ignition" of armament, defence minister AK Antony told Rajya Sabha today.

In wake of the incident, the Navy has ordered extensive checks on weapon-related safety systems on all its submarines, he said in a suo motu statement on the submarine accident in Mumbai last week.

The minister also pointed out that the "rapidity and intensity of the explosions and the resultant damage to the submarine indicate that the 18 personnel on board would not have survived".

"Preliminary investigations indicate that the explosion was due to the possible ignition of armament. The cause of ignition is, however, yet to be established. Forensic examination would throw more light into the possible cause of ignition," Antony said.

He said this would be possible only after the "partially submerged" submarine is afloat and dewatered. "A board of inquiry with all relevant specialists has been constituted to investigate the likely causes of the accident at the earliest."

After the accident, the Navy ordered an audit of standard operating procedures (SOPs) on all operational submarines and extensive checks on the weapon-related safety systems, the defence minister said.

He said as the "explosion and resultant damage were nearly instantaneous, the 18 personnel could not evacuate. Although full details are yet to emerge, the rapidity and intensity of explosion and resultant damage sustained by the submarine indicates that the personnel would not have survived".

Antony said that globally-renowned salvage agencies have been approached and they are undertaking a survey for salvage operations.

"There is also an offer of help from Russia, where the refit and upgrade of the submarine had been undertaken," he said.

Nonsense! The Ming sub is testing a new AIP device something which can be unforseen due to the new technology while INS Sindhurakshak is not under any testing and is a proven Kilo class submarine with many mature technology. Poor safety protocol is likely the reason for explosion.

Plus that is holy a decade years ago... We learn from those things and PLAN Submarine are some of the most active and safe, no accident has happen after that.

And there are others, which CPC has managed to "hide" ..not so successfully, perhaps.

August 2011 - radioactivity release on board an 8,000-ton Type 094 Jin-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, docked in Dalian. According to reports, China Era Electronics Corporation was installing an electronic system when the leak occurred.[3][4]

Details are unclear, but The Washington Post reported in 2003 that there had been other incidents, including "the reported explosion of a Xia class nuclear submarine during construction", and that one of the first Ming-class submarines was scrapped because a fire broke out on board also during construction.[1]

AFP - India has ordered checks on the weapons safety systems of all its submarines after a deadly explosion on a vessel last week which is thought to have killed 18 crewmen, its defence minister said Monday.

A.K. Antony also said naval divers were yet to fully access the Russian-built INS Sindhurakshak which sank in a Mumbai harbour last Wednesday after a series of explosions in which munitions ignited.

"Extensive checks on weapons-related safety systems and standard operating procedures on all operational submarines of the Indian navy have been ordered," Antony told parliament.

India currently has nine functional Russian-built and four German-origin diesel-fired submarines besides a nuclear-powered submarine which Moscow has leased to the Indian navy.

The fully-armed submarine is resting on the bottom of the harbour and Antony said divers and engineers were struggling to re-float it because of holes in its previously water-right compartments.

"Globally-renowned professional salvage agencies have been approached and they are undertaking the study of salvage operations," Antony told parliament's upper house.

"There is also an offer of help from Russia where the refit and upgrade had been undertaken," he added.

The disaster, the navy's worst since the sinking of a frigate by a Pakistani submarine in 1971, has cast a shadow over India's defence capabilities as it seeks to counter a military build-up by an increasingly assertive China.

Just days before, India had launched its first domestically-built aircraft carrier and began sea trials for the first Indian-made nuclear submarine, trumpeted as a "giant stride" for the country.

In February 2010, the INS Sindhurakshak suffered a fire while docked in Visakhapatnam city in southern India, killing a 24-year-old sailor.

No more submarine accident has happened. What JL-2 fall back from launch of Type094 SSBN? I almost laugh when this kind of smearing is posted. Just becos your IN submarine maintenance is lousy, dont drag other down.

Our Submarine fleet is much superior and even our Kilo do not send back to Russian for overhaul and instead done in our more advance shipyard... Since the Sov destroyer brought in the late 90s. China has no need to buy any warship or import any major sub system from foreign countries for our navy.

Do you know that only 7 of your nuke ships can reach IOR. 4 by attrition count and by this graph you can see how noisy they are. With Pakistan having only 3 subs (Agosta 90B) operational, shouldn't be hard to kill em. After all MK 54 nose arrays and INS CHARLIE and INS ARIHANT could use the exercise! :laughcry:

Look into the mirror before you talk? As for those MK 54 nose array, I heard American going to rise more price becos your rupee is falling everyday. Another news is PAFKA and Rafale deal are all going to be cancel. Becos India is broke. Economic falling apart. :lol:

I must say we should take this disaster head on and stop comparing with chinese for god's sake.Its immaterial whether they have good aip or not the fact remains we have none either.Its time to stop comparing and chest thumping and acknowledge the adversary's strength and learn from it
