Singapore may buy six AN/TPQ-53 (V) counterfire radars for
approximately USD179 million, according to a notification published by the US Defense
Security Cooperation Agency on 8 October. If the sale goes through Singapore would be the first international customer for the system, which was first fielded by the US Army in Iraq and
Afghanistan in 2010.

The AN/TPQ-53 is described by manufacturer Lockheed Martin
"as being able to detect, classify, track and determine the launch points of incoming rockets, mortar rounds and artillery shells over a 90-degree sector or the full 360-degree azimuthal arc, with the switch between the two generating only 'a millisecond degradation' in tracking performance."

According to the DSCA statement,Singapore's requirement asks for
120-degree sector scan capability and "will reduce the vulnerability of forces to indirect fire attacks and provide them with the information necessary to respond to such attacks."

The AN/TPQ-53 system comprises two 5-ton, 6x6 Medium Tactical
Vehicle (MTV) chassis, both of which are equipped with two-man armoured cabs, with the radar's active-array assembly in one case and an operations shelter in the other. A pair of
trailer-mounted 60 kW electrical power generators are also
supplied.

The Singapore Armed Forces currently employs the Saab ARTHUR (Artillery Hunting Radar) weapon location system mounted on Bv206 tracked all-
terrain vehicles. The ARTHUR system was deployed to Afghanistan in September 2009
to guard a forward operating base (FOB) of US and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops against
rocket attacks.
