Conversions to Buddhism have resulted in better literacy rates and gender equality.

  • reported today. This estimate comes from the Buddhist Society of India, founded by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, a Dalit icon, who converted to Buddhism in 1956.

It was on 11 July that four Dalits were accused of killing a cow and beaten in public in Una. The incident sparked nationwide outrage and triggered protests against the targeting of Dalits and Muslims in the name of cow protection.

On 14 April, last year, the mother and brother of scholar Rohith Vemula converted to Buddhism on the birth anniversary of Ambedkar's 125th birth anniversary. Vemula had killed himself inside the campus of Hyderabad Central University on 17 January, 2016. His death was widely regarded as a result of institutional discrimination.

P.G. Jyotikar, a trustee of the Buddhist Society of India, told the The Indian Expressthat conversions in Gujarat went from 400-500 a year to 1,500-1,600 till last year.

An estimated 87 percent of the 8.4 million Buddhists in India are converts from other religions, the majority trying to break free of the Hindu caste system.

Maheriya, a recent convert from Kheda district, told The Indian Express, "We find peace in Buddhism, where everyone is alike. There are no gods here who carry weapons, which are a sign of war and destruction. Buddhism teaches only peace and compassion. It gives you inner satisfaction that you are no longer looked down upon by those whose mindset gets polluted as they climb up the caste ladder."

Earlier this month, IndiaSpend reported that Dalits first started converting to Buddhism in 1956, the year that Ambedkar embraced Buddhism. IndiaSpend further reported that conversions to Buddhism rise every time the Dalit movement escalates including in the 1980s and 1990s.

Further, conversions to Buddhism have resulted in better literacy rates and gender equality.

However, the overall growth of Buddhists in India have declined. Citing census data, the IndiaSpend report pointed out that the number of Buddhists grew by 6.13 percent in 2001-11 and 16.76 percent for Hindus. In the previous decades, Buddhists grew by 24.53 percent and Hindus by 20.35 percent.

I thought you are born a Brahman or Dalit etc?

It is my observation from the sidelines that urban elite Hindus hate the Muslims more.

But in the vast hinterland of the real India, what is building up is a war of unspeakable proportions between the Hindu higher castes and the Dalits.

In this war, the Muslims and Christians and Sikhs and Jains will be swept aside when the blood letting begins in real earnest.

Its not the Christian conversions that are upping the ante. But those turning Boudh. And those are in the tens of millions. History repeating.

The sanghi sham bubble of Buddhism being a sister dharmic faith is soon going to burst spectacularly in the open.

Cheers, Doc

What are the chances of alliance(s) ......... for the time being sanghis are in no mood of alliance, for them its either you are one of them or against them ........ so even if it unfolds as you say Muslims, Sikhs would be siding with Dalit most probably?

If it repeats like Pakistan, which it currently looks like to me, there will be no alliances. Every group will be at war on its own. Against everybody else.

Don't think things would carried away that far ............. billion plus people and violence would not only disrupt peace in india but the whole region. However, suppose if it does happen we may see Martial law for the first time in india? Or else everything is lost and huge problems for neighbors too.

This ideology needs to be defeated.

We may be corrupt, but we are as a people secular.

This BS is just rapid poison. I'm seeing highly educated senior doctors, scientists, army officers, all slowly getting radicalized.

The general refrain is bc ab bahut ho gaya. Bahut le liya hamne. Time to lay down the law and set out some lakshmanrekha.

Confused. Sometimes Muslims are foreigners. When you point out to them that they are not, and equal heirs of this land, then the argument (grudgingly) turns to Islam.

But other minorities (like self) are at great pains reassured that "you are ok and will not be touched".

This is supposed to be a tap, which you can turn on and off whenever you feel like. After undesirable are "taught a lesson" we will all become docile secular tolerant all-welcoming Hindus again.

Hey... back from the ban?

Lets see what are the results for next election in india .......... will prove if majority indians really voted for economics or on some religious grounds.

Dangerous signs.

Sheeple they never had a say of their own.

Buddhang Sharanang Gacchami

May be they can be great ambassadors to our neighboring Myanmar - some lessons there can be learnt and implemented here. :agree:

Yup. Dangerous when it starts permeating into a secular national institution like the army.

And it has. Joe saw it earlier than I did. But I'm seeing it only too clearly now as well sadly.

And if you know me, you would know that I have very little time for sheeple. Mere saare dost meri tarah hain.

So scarier.

Cheers, Doc

Your think tanks should study Pakistan and its last decade .......... we are 7 times smaller than you ....... but your risks and threats seem 7 times bigger than us. Division when it starts will go to the levels you can't imagine even snaghis would get divided at one stage.

Aur tumharay Muslay kuch nai kar saktay ........... don't waste time on them :D

I am not "wasting time" on my Muslay only.

I do not like any underdog being beaten on by a bully. If our muslay do bs, they deserve to be hammered. But what is happening in India today is victimization. On a national scale. That is getting institutionalized. And changing social behavior and thinking.

Of course this is going to develop into a self eating monster. But as with Pakistan, those fanning the flames do not care. Because it is serving their agenda.

Every bully cares a damn about the future ramifications of his actions. Because he lives in the delusion of his overarching power and untouchability.

Till one day the mob comes for him. Or his family.

This may have existed forever, it is only that it got the chance to vent our for the first time ....... many indians may have been fooled under a false slogan ...... but we on the other side knew what results of your last election mean. And the way I look at it, it would be indians starting Ghazwa e hind rather than Pakistanis.
