Shutdown and massive unrest in Nepal town after Narendra Modi's trip reportedly cancelled

Normal life was partially hit on Friday in parts of Nepal as several opposition parties enforced a shutdown against the reported cancellation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposed trip to the religious town of Janakpur.
Modi was scheduled to visit Janakpur, said to be the birthplace of Sita, Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, and another sacred Hindu pilgrimage site, Muktinath, located in the southern mountainous region during his visit to Nepal to attend the 18th SAARC summit here on November 26-27.

Janakpur, Dhanusha, Mahottari and Sarlani districts were among the affected areas due to the shutdown. Educational institutions and markets were partially closed and transport services also came to a halt. There were also anti-government rallies in parts of the city. "The people of Janakpur have shown spontaneous protest as the news of cancellation of Modi's visit to Janakpur and Lumbini, the important religious sites situated in southern Nepal, was spread," said prominent Madhesi leader Rajendra Mahato, President of Sadbhawana Party.

"We want Modi to visit Janakpur and his felicitation should be held in public at Barhabigha ground, not behind closed doors, as proposed by the ruling parties, Nepali Congress and CPN-UML," said Mahato talking to PTI. The government was trying to dissociate Modi from the general public on the pretext of providing security to him, which is absurd, he said. The people of Janakpur want to see Modi take part in the public felicitation function and address a mass gathering at Barha Bigha, said Mahato.

The agitators also burnt effigies of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam, who had said recently that Modi would not address public gatherings during the proposed felicitation programme. Mahato alleged that efforts are on to create distance between Modi and the Madhesi people living in the southern plains of Nepal. Earlier on Friday, the Nepal government said that Modi's visit to Janakpur had not yet been officially cancelled despite reports about it being called off. Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Ranjit Rae also told reporters this morning that the Indian Embassy here did not receive any official communication about the cancellation of Modi's visit to the pilgrimage sites, including Janakpur.

Modi visit to shrines on, red faces in Nepal govt

A day after announcing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had cancelled his planned visit to three religious sites near Kathmandu in Nepal, two ministers in the Nepal government retracted their statements on Friday, saying they had “no official communication” and that “as far as we are concerned, the programme stands”.

The ministers, Bimalendra Nidhi (Minister of Physical Planning) and Mahendra Bahadur Pandey (Minister of Foreign Affairs), had said on Thursday that they had received information from the Indian government that the trip to the three religious sites — Janakpur, Lumbini and Muktinath Dham — had been cancelled.

The retraction comes reportedly after Nepal PM Sushil Koirala spoke to Modi and requested him to go ahead with the programme. He also reportedly said that the ministers’ statements were an outcome of a “miscommunication” and that the Nepal government was waiting to welcome Modi to the sites during his visit to the country for a Saarc summit on November 26-27.

Ouch that was an ouch moment for Nepal govt. :D

The public rally in another independent country made no sense in first place.
It does make sense because Lumbini was the birthplace of Lord Buddha and so its importance. Janakpur, happens to be Goddess Sita's place of birth and Muktinath is both a Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site where the temple of Lord Shiva is situated.

Religion has to be kept separate from politics so yeah it makes no sense.
And he was gonna address a public rally and not go for a private waltz

Protests break out in Nepal as Modi reschedules Nepal tour

Protests broke out in Janakpur and other places in Nepal on Sunday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi cancelled his scheduled visit to these towns and decided to restrict his tour only to the SAARC Summit to be held in Kathmandu from November 26-27.
The Indian external affairs ministry said that this was decided due to Modi's "unavoidable domestic commitments and pre-scheduled travels within" India.
"During his last visit to Kathmandu, Prime Minister Modi had expressed a desire to visit other places in Nepal, including Janakpur, Lumbini and Muktinath, to highlight, in particular, the strong civilisational links and unparalleled people-to-people contacts between our two countries. There has been widespread interest in Prime Minister's schedule in the upcoming visit to Nepal for the SAARC Summit.

"Due to Prime Minister's unavoidable domestic commitments and pre-scheduled travels within the country, he will travel only to Kathmandu to attend the SAARC Summit," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said.

The three places he had specifically desired to go were Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, as well as Janakpur and Muktinath, which both Hindus and Buddhists hold as sacred.

He also said the Prime Minister deeply values the special relationship between India and Nepal and will always welcome every occasion to visit Nepal and interact with the leadership and the people of Nepal.

"He looks forward to an early opportunity to visit Janakpur, Lumbini, Muktinath and other places in Nepal," he further added.

Modi will be leaving India on November 25 to attend the 18th SAARC Summit in Kathmandu on November 26-27.
