They were more into challenging stereotypes in a rather obscene, if funny, manner.

No thats alright; I personally went from Islam to Agnosticism to Atheism to Agnosticism to Deism and later back to Islam; a very bumpy ride !

I think you missed some. I was mostly deism and pretty much stayed on course.

I guess most shows and movies around the world reinforce and and strengthen prevalent stereotypes. I remember watching X-Files as a kid in the 90s and in one episode based on the Bhopal Gas Tragedy an Indian airport was shown with snake charmers and people without limbs begging with cars dating from the 1950s. I doubt even the most pathetic train station in the middle of nowhere in India would be like this. A few years ago some Canadian funky automated parking lot was shown as being in Bombay in the Mission Impossible movie. If only it were true.
India too depicts westerners as immoral. Nothing new here. It is fiction and is meant to amplify stereotypes for effect. Doesn't make it right - but business is business. If you want facts, no one is stopping you from watching documentaries.
