Shortage In Chinese Products Could Mean Empty Shelves In U.S.
By Jon DelanoFebruary 28, 2020 at 6:26 pm
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The label “Made in China” is more common on store shelves than “Made in America.”

But that’s about to change.

“Literally, empty shelves in Target and Walmart as early as April,” predicts David Iwinski, a local China business consultant who once ran a factory in China.

Most retail stores are likely to have shortages because the coronavirus in China is hampering the manufacture of products shipped to America.

Some 780 million Chinese people currently have travel restrictions, keeping many from their jobs, Iwinski told KDKA money editor Jon Delano on Friday.

“The factories that have opened in the non-restricted zones, they’re reporting to me worker levels at 40 to 45 percent. Sixty percent of their people can’t get back.”

The impact here?

“Apple announced already having shortages of iPhones. Nike has announced that they’re going to have shortages and clothing is coming in short supply now.”

“Amazon has a number of products that are simply unavailable.”

Over $560 billion worth of products come from China.

While some of these products have alternative sources in other countries, many are exclusively from China — everything from electric blankets to video game consoles, from cooking appliances to baby carriages.

In fact, Proctor & Gamble just announced that Chinese materials impact 17,600 different finished products.

Other product shortages are expected in clothing, computers, cell phones, shoes and even toys.

So when might this be over?

“We think August, September, this will be a memory,” predicts Iwinski.

This coronavirus put the end to a long argued subject, China and US, who needs whom more.

There are discussions happening in boardrooms across Europe and America, right now - once this is all over, however it ends China is not coming out of this unscathed either. As I have often repeated, Chinese factories are contracted directly or indirectly by US and European businesses - they are all making plans to address the risk of over dependency on one country. This is a huge wake up call to business leaders everywhere.

This isn't the final chapter in this episode either, there is more to come.

In the meantime, China's is winning hearts and minds everywhere, France, Italy, Brazil, the US and even Russia.

Of course everyone gets hurt badly by this coronavirus, but at least China can support herself on her own, US can't.

Depends on the individuals. Many are not patriotic enough to care.

US firms have suffered losses due to the lockdown in China and so it is still mainly about profits.
The rest can be legislated such as the one sponsored by Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) to end US dependence on China for Pharmaceuticals by 2022.

The tall claims of Chinese self reliance during the crisis is false, China relied on US supplies to fight COVID19 too. One such example is the Du Ponts 500 acre facility in Richmond where thousands of US workers labored around the clock to produce and supply key raw materials for much needed PPE for health care works in China. This is just one example there are many more.

China was largely self reliant during the fight against the coronavirus, some countries did help China ,but the scale never made any sinificant impact in the fight.

So you reckon once the economies are devastated in the industrialised nations, they're going to find and spend trillions to ensure they're not dependent on just one country?

Business people have no motherlands, only profits. Don't count too much on them.

No dear if that was the case thousands of Du Pont workers in the US would not work non stop in February to support China. Besides China is ranked number 3 in terms of criticality to global supply chain after the US and Germany.

no choice, many businesses in the US and Europe continue to experience severe disruptions due to COVID lockdown in China and its aftermath. It will be a gradual process 3 to 5 years and its not going to cost trillions.

How come China didn't hear much from US or other countries for supplies and after initial shock,China quickly met and demand while US falls into this chao for supplies even it was not hit that hard like what happened initially in China.

Who do you think supplied China with experimental drugs like Remdesivir which has proved highly effective?

The whole system is setup to maximise profit. Where is the scope for nationalism?

A shortage of iphones and Nike is no big deal - but all nations should have thier essentials such as food, medicine etc in house.
