Sharp rise in number of asylum seekers

So, our people go to rich countries of the world and not to a country that is poorer than BD.
lol.. you guys try hard in every thread to prove that.. we are talking about historic migration here, if bd becomes rich tomorrow compared to India, it wont mean you guys never migrated to India(in the past)....

Bangladeshis consume half of what average Indian does. You are the poorest country in South Asia other than Nepal....and even Nepal in 2010 had an absolute poverty prevalence (by world bank measure) of 15% compared to 43% of Bangladesh.

I mean why else do so many poor wretches try to flee to India (which is now the host to millions of illegal Bangladeshis according to UN reports)....and even force and risk their daughters climbing border fences and getting shot at the border like we all saw?

.
Tbh these assholes go there... do shit and then visa gets closed for people who really need it to do something in life.

Heard that children of Bengali people in Italy has no respect for their parents.... hookup with Italian and other nationals does drugs etc. parents scold or something and they call the police. Is that true by any chance?

First time hearing that. I know that some of them are starting to open up Italian style cafes in East London.

I thought that title belonged to Afghanistan . By Percentage Afghanistan tops followed by Bangladesh I think

Data not available for Afghanistan but you are probably right (for absolute poverty). But Bangladesh has higher per capita income than Nepal by PPP (but Bangladesh has higher absolute poverty rate than Nepal).

Nepal in turn is higher PPP than afghanistan.

http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/weo/2016/01/weodata/weorept.aspx?pr.x=80&pr.y=13&sy=2014&ey=2021&scsm=1&ssd=1&sort=country&ds=.&br=1&c=512,513,558&s=PPPPC&grp=0&a=

But given how much higher Bangladesh PPP is compared to Nepal, it is quite shocking to see how high their absolute poverty rate is.

You may quote the UN statistics as you wish, but this year according to a statement made by the minister in the parliament absolute poverty is 24%.

Yup this number will get a big asterisk if included in any international report....just like WHO did recently.

Reminds me of the literacy rate claims made by BAL recently as well.

Anyway lets see the link of the statement.

Let's follow this list which seems to be more accurate representation

No offense but Bangladesh seemed to have done better than Pakistan over the years... considering the age of both the countries. India has done exceptionally well... but this is not to deny that none of these countries have widespread poverty. Wealth is still in the hands of select few.

Why not follow the exact poverty lists?

Pakistan does not have Widespread poverty like BD has . Infact we have the least poverty amongst all big nations in South Asia after Srilanka .

http://povertydata.worldbank.org/poverty/country/BGD

BD poverty by $ 1.90 = 40 %

http://povertydata.worldbank.org/poverty/country/PAK

PK = 8.3 %

http://hdr.undp.org/en/content/income-gini-coefficient

Pakistan also has a better GINI index than both BD and India which means widespread poverty is less and money is better distributed . That is the reason we have such a big middle class.

Bro poverty rate is not the same as per capita income as you yourself have said wealth is concentrated.....so a wealthy class getting wealthier would change the per capita income but not the poverty rate.

Thats why I have serious doubts about Bangladesh Gini index given its ppp per capita and its poverty rate....I am pretty sure one of these figures has to be wrong....the question is which one and which direction.

.
How does it really matter, who is richer by a few rupees here and there? What is the point of splitting hairs?

Is it a big deal if one brother is richer than the other?

We're all in the same dismal boat if you ask me, even compared to China. But we don't have to.

Lately, it is fashionable to write vengeful articles like this in Bangladeshi rags, which makes me laugh...

We desis will never change.

Well ours has seen improvements... that poverty index used to be 60+ for us.

Aren't we having a discussion on GDP? Allow me to scroll read some more.

The article talks about pal nuke program starting on 67... I thought it started after or at 71 to never let another surrender ever happen again... (from that infamous bhutto's speech)

This discussion has diverted and derailed all over the place.

The general socio economic comparisons must include poverty in addition to just PPP per capita to get a complete picture of the income situation of the masses.

Gini index is very highly susceptible to some errors in calculation and analysis I found (I will have to dig up where I posted this earlier).

No doubt its improving. I think better numbers will come out in the next World Bank release when they are changing the survey method to a better one based on what they saw in India.
