Ruler inspects amenities at the purpose-built A380 facility

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, toured the new Concourse 3 of Terminal 3 at the Dubai International airport.

Shaikh Mohammad was accompanied by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai’s Crown Prince, in his tour around the building which cost over Dh12 billion. It will be officially inaugurated in January 2013 and will have the capacity of holding 19 million passengers annually.

He started his tour at the current building — Concourse 2 — by inspecting the Residency and Foreigners Affairs counters, where he directed the UAE nationals working there on the best way to receive and see off visitors in the UAE with a smile and kind words.

Shaikh Mohammad stopped at the passengers’ inspection gateways and ordered that visitors be treated with respect and hospitality in a manner which reflects the traditions of the UAE’s culture.

Shaikh Mohammad then headed towards the new building via the internal airport Metro which links the two buildings and extends over a distance of 1.5 kilometres in both directions and has the capacity of carrying 6,000 passengers per hour.

Train system earns praise

He praised the idea of the internal Metro which facilitates passengers’ transport to deliver them on time for their flights.

Shaikh Mohammad inspected the new building’s facilities, including the special halls for receiving passengers on the giant Emirates Airbus A380. The building which was designed for receiving this giant airplane covers an area of 528 square metres and is designed to accommodate twenty A380 airplanes at the same time.

Shaikh Mohammad also viewed the designs for the first and business class areas and the 5- and 4-star hotels which include 200 rooms, a health spa, and a business centre.

Shaikh Mohammad also toured the passengers’ luggage area and viewed the latest techniques in carrying and loading luggage in a completely automated manner.

Before leaving the building, Shaikh Mohammad also toured the arrivals area for Emirates passengers.

Shaikh Mohammad was also briefed by Maj Gen Mohammad Ahmad Al Merri, Director General of the Dubai General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (DNRD), on the latest techniques of electronic gateways used by those arriving in the country.

Al Merri said that two gateways have been activated experimentally before 12 new gateways are formally activated in the new concourse.

With the new Dh12 billion Emirates airline terminal set to open in January, His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, made an inspection tour of the facility at the Dubai International Airport on Saturday, calling on the staff to be kind and nice.

He was accompanied by Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai; Shaikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai; and Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Civil Aviation and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates airline and Group.

The terminal will have an annual capacity of 19 million passengers.

Shaikh Mohammed began his tour at Concourse 2 where he inspected the counters of the General Department of Residency and Foreigners Affairs. He directed employees there to deal with passengers nicely and kindly. At the passengers check gate, Shaikh Mohammed ordered that security people deal with passengers in a civilised manner and pay them due respect.

Shaikh Mohammed and accompanying officials then headed for the new terminal through the internal metro which can transport 6,000 passengers per hour between the old and new terminal. Shaikh Mohammed hailed the idea of the internal metro.

Entering the new terminal, which is 645 metres long and 90 metres wide and covers an area of 528 square metres, Shaikh Mohammed inspected the arrival and departure lounges, which can accommodate 20 A-380 aircraft.

The new terminal is partially an underground structure and has five gates for remote stands, comprising an ‘Automated People Mover’ for both arrivals and departures. The terminal extends above the ground under a metal shell to accommodate 20 aircraft with the lower and upper levels of Concourse 3 connected by means of a special vertical transportation system (Sky Train).

Shaikh Mohammed also inspected the designs for the First and Business Class lounges as well as the two four and five-star hotels which have about 200 rooms in addition to a health club and a business centre.

At the luggage section, Shaikh Mohammed familiarised himself with the latest technology used in transporting and uploading luggages via the ‘Automated People Mover’ in addition to the vehicular and baggage handling system.

At the terminal 2 arrivals section, Shaikh Mohammed was briefed by Major General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director-General of the General Department of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, on the latest e-gates system which has been introduced to speed up and simplify the immigration process at entry and exit points. In his presentation, Al Marri also touched on the smart gates for people of special needs.

Shaikh Mohammed hailed the General Department of Residency and Foreigners Affairs’ initiatives, and urged Al Marri to make all possible efforts to achieve 100 per cent passenger satisfaction which he said would mirror the country’s culture.

Writing on his Twitter page later, Shaikh Mohammed said Emirates airline is a model for the rest of our national companies. “It started locally and succeeded internationally.”

“Emirates airline is a development success story and a national accomplishment. It serves our children and the future generations,” he wrote.

Dubai Airports facts and Figures

Dubai Airports owns and manages the operation of both of Dubai’s airports – Dubai International (DXB) as well as Dubai World Central (DWC).

Dubai Airports was established as a commercial entity in April 2007, following organisational restructuring of the erstwhile Dubai Department of Civil Aviation (DCA).

Fast Facts

Dubai International comprises three terminals
Terminal 1 serves all airlines
Terminal 2 serves scheduled, charter, and special flights (pilgrimage)
Terminal 3 is dedicated for use by Emirates Airline

DXB is ranked the fourth busiest airport in the world in terms of international passengers according to Airports Council International’s latest figures (ACI). The airport serves more than 150 airlines flying to over 220 destinations across six continents.

The collective capacity of T1, T2, and T3 is 60 million passengers per annum; increasing to 75mppa when the A380-dedicated Concourse 3 opens.

Dubai International recorded passenger traffic of 4,566,673 during April, an increase of 7.8 per cent compared to 4,237,548 during the same month in 2011.

The annual passenger traffic in 2011 reached 50.98 million, a year-on-year increase of 8 per cent compared to 47.2 million recorded in 2010. Passenger numbers are projected to reach 56.5 million in 2012 and 98 million by 2020.

Total built up area of DI is 1,444,474 sqm
[T1+C1 (246,474sqm) + T2 (13000 sqm) + T3+C2 (1,185,000 sqm)]

The major phases of the development to follow Phase 1 will incorporate up to four passenger terminals, with works on the last phase completing by the end of the next decade.

The airport will have a total of five parallel runways, 4.5km long, each separated by a minimum of 800m

DWC is designed to support aviation, tourism, and logistics well into the future.
