KARACHI: As parts of Sindh shut down Thursday on the Muttahida Qaumi Movement's call to observe a day of mourning over its worker Sohail Ahmed's killing, MQM chief Altaf Hussain announced that he would sever all ties with his party, saying he would deliver his last address to MQM workers and supporters tomorrow.

Talking to a private news channel he also asked for the nation's forgiveness.

The MQM chief claimed that the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) had never accepted him and accused the country's premier intelligence agency of implicating him in cases even though no corruption was proved against him.

He also said that he had seen the 'ISI's hand supporting the lawyers movement against former president Pervez Musharraf'.

Altaf said he held Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah responsible for the murder of 36 party activists, according to a statement issued on the MQM's website.

The remarks of the MQM supremo come as his party observes a national day of mourning and a wheel jam strike in Sindh over the 'extrajudicial killing' of one of its workers in Karachi.

MQM representatives on Tuesday staged a walkout after shouting slogans during Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah's address in the Sindh Assembly.

Shah had termed the MQM's protest, which was staged a few days earlier at the CM House, as an "attack on the CM house" rather than the expression of a grievance.

Altaf says will deliver his last address tomorrow
16:11 Jan 29, 2015 PAKISTAN

LONDON: MQM Chief Altaf Hussain said Thursday from tomorrow onwards he would not have any link with the party.

Talking exclusively to Samaa from London, Hussain said that he would deliver his address tomorrow for the last time.

“After tomorrow, I will have no link with the MQM,” he asserted.

MQM chief admitted he has failed to transform Pakistan.

“I wanted to save Pakistan…I could have saved it but now I can only pray,” Altaf said.

He said that establishment did not like him from the beginning because he doesn’t belong to any feudal family.

Altaf eulogized the services of Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad, saying he had tried his level best to restore law and order in Karachi.

“But he (Ishrat) couldn’t fight with army, rangers and the police,” he added.

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leaders started gathering at party headquarters (Nine Zero) late on Thursday as party chief Altaf Hussain announced his desire to step down from party leadership.

“Altaf Hussain feels helpless and upset over the killing of his workers and has expressed his desire to step down from party leadership,” an MQM leader told The Express Tribune requesting anonymity.

“The chief has asked us to select a new leader,” he added.

MQM parliamentarians have told Altaf they will resign from the provincial assemblies and National Assembly if he steps down.

Further, the MQM chief has announced his address at the inauguration of Altaf Hussain University in Hyderabad tomorrow will be his last after which he will give up his leadership post.

The party called for a ‘peaceful shutter-down strike’ today to protest against the judicial killings of their workers after the body of the in-charge of Society sector unit 64 was found.

Karachi police killed party worker, claims MQM leader

Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Haider Abbas Rizvi alleged that the MQM worker whose body was recovered yesterday was killed by the Karachi police and went on to demand justice for the ‘extra-judicial’ killings of 36 party workers.

“Karachi police murdered Sohail Ahmed after kidnapping him,” Rizvi said, while addressing the media in Karachi after Ahmed’s funeral prayers.

Ahmed was the in-charge of Society sector unit 64. His body was found in Mawach Goth on January 28.

“Sohail Ahmed was innocent; he was neither a terrorist nor a criminal,” Rizvi asserted.

The MQM leader questioned who would investigate the cases of extra-judicial killings of their workers since, he added, the Sindh government was ‘biased’ against them.

“It has become a trend to kill MQM workers,” he said, adding that ”MQM workers are not convicts.”

Earlier, condemning the killings, MQM chief Altaf Hussain said he holds Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah responsible for the murders and that his party was targeted in the name of security operations.
