CHENNAI: Two days after welcoming the idea of a referendum for a separate 'Eelam', DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Thursday said the "blood spilt and the sacrifices made by Tamils" in Sri Lanka would not go waste and a separate nation will come into existence some day.

"A separate Tamil Eelam rings in the ears of Tamils living all over the world as a liberation song. The sacrifice of lives and the blood spilt by Tamil people in Sri Lanka would not go waste," he said in a letter to party workers.

The DMK leader said "if not tomorrow, Tamil Eelam will come into existence day after."

Referring to the demand for a UN-sponsored referendum for this purpose, Karunanidhi said countries including East Timor and South Sudan had come into existence following such an initiative by the international body.

He recalled earlier DMK resolution in 1983 demanding a separate homeland for Tamils, saying it was not possible for them to co-exist with the majority Sinhalas "in the wake of the genocide."

Karunanidhi had on April 17 welcomed the idea of a referendum for creation of a separate Tamil Ealam and called for India to play a role in this regard.

Who was the famous politician who fasted from breakfast to lunch for the sake of SL Tamils in 2008?

It is time that Karunadhi should realise that he is old and anytime will go to graveyard. Enjoy your old age and leave the other things to the people here. Time up.

They establish a Tamil nation in Sri Lanka, then what? If you think they'll all go home and watch 'The Simpsons' then your're pretty much on the track to being screwed. These guys will set a precedent for Dravidian Separatists in India to follow, the last thing you would want is for such a possibility to ever become a reality!

Looks like Karunanidhi's 2014 election campaign has already started. He needs to liberate himself from that wheelchair before he could think of liberating others..

Having sympathy for Lankan tamils are one thing.. but to use it for once own political advantage is another..

Well your assumptions have some basis, but the Dravid "Nadu" movement does not really exist anywhere. That issue was put to bed back in the 60s itself and though people talk about it even now, it is not more a political thing than what people care about. The people of South India are too invested in India's and the regions success since independence, and will not let a Tamil "Eelam" or whatever entity influence them. The Eelam supporters imagine it to be like Northern Ireland, not an extension of Tamil Nadu.

All said, the DMK's support has always been mainstream. Although they initially supported the LTTE, they distanced themselves after Rajiv Gandhi's assassination. The people who really hurt the chances of negotiations and peaceful settlement were the LTTE. They systematically eliminated all moderate voices and had their own ideas of "liberation" which resulted in the deaths of so many innocent Tamils and Sinhalese.

Yes, you have caught on to what I was talking about. This is exactly my point. The Dravidistan Movt ran out of steam however, a victory in Sri Lanka will re-energize their spirit and India may have another insurgency on their hands. Case in point:
After the fall of East Pakistan, the Baloch insurgency flared up to unimaginable heights, then the Sindhudesh insurgency started in tandem.

if need be, India will crush tamil seperatism with Iron Fist, you saw how they crushed Sikhs.

the best thing india can do at this stage is diversfy tamil population by sending people from north to south.

DMK was a great proponent of Dravidistan.
LTTE India assassinated your Prime Minister!

DMK dumped this idea long ago.

There is not LTTE India. The core group that planned and killed RG came from SL.

As for the 3rd part, the comments itself explains the reasons. He is desperately trying to revive his party's fortunes which suffered a massive hit in the last general elections by using the cast & language card. His party is now only the 3rd biggest in TN assembly, so he is not even the opposition leader....... How the mighty have fallen.
