ISLAMABAD - A parliamentary committee has been informed that Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDCL) has started seismic survey in district Gwadar of Balochistan to explore oil and gas reserves.

“The state-owned OGDCL has completed the geological survey and now, in collaboration with a Chinese Exploration and Production company, seismic survey is underway,” said Managing Director (MD) OGDCL, Zahid Mir while briefing the Senate Functional Committee on Problems of Less Developed Areas.
The committee meeting was presided over by Senator Mohammad Usman Kakar.

Senator Usman Khan Kakar informed the committee that hepatitis was widely spreading in Balochistan and the poor people of the province can’t afford the hepatitis tests which cost up to Rs15,000.
They urged the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources to direct E&P companies to provide free of cost hepatitis tests to the people of the most under developed province of the country.

Zahid Mir said that for the first time in the history OGDCL has carried geological survey and after seismic survey the company will be in a position to start drilling.
“The area has huge potential for producing gas”, he added.

MD said that OGDCL has spent millions of rupees on various developmental schemes in less developed areas and during ongoing financial year it will spend hundreds of millions across the four provinces.

The committee was told that OGDCL has launched a special talent hunt programme for the students of the less developed areas of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochsitan under which 50 students of each province were enrolled in Institute Business Administration (IBA) for which two months foundation course training was provided to the students of the provinces, but unfortunately only two students of Balochistan and none of KP managed to pass IBA admission test.

The meeting was informed that in the OGDCL would ink agreements with Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and Quaid-e-Azam University for giving scholarships to the students of the less developed areas in order to bring them at par with the rest of the country.

The committee asked the Ministry of Petroleum why Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) didn’t establish regional offices in Peshawar and Quetta.
Additional Secretary Ministry of Petroleum, Furqan Buhadar Khan informed the committee information would be sought from Cabinet Secretariat and OGRA as why no regional office was established in KP and Bbalochsitan’s provincial capital as per directions of the Senate.

Director General (DG) oil, Ministry of the Petroleum informed the committee that Pakistan’s current installed refining capacity is 18.
79 million tons per annum (MTPA) with five refineries, while two more refineries are planned.

He has said that KP government is expected to sign an agreement with the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) for the setting up of an oil refinery at Karak.

Following a land dispute between the KP government and locals, state owned Pakistan State Oil (PSO) shelved plan of installing a refinery in KP that was proposed by former Petroleum Minister Dr Asim Hussian.
The committee directed the departments concerned to ensure establishment of the refinery in Karak.
“If there is any land dispute, the committee members were ready to help resolve it with consultation of locals.

He added that Pak Arab Refinery Company (PARCO) and Attock Refinery Limited (ARL) are operating at 100% as per nameplate capacity while rest of the refineries are older, especially the two plants by BYCO group, which jointly represent about 38% of total installed refining capacity of the country.

As against the above mentioned refining capacity the actual annual production of the refineries during 2015-16 remained 11.
7 million tons or 62% capacity utilization, he added.

I would search offshore... the odds are better of striking an oil field there... how do i know that?... i don't... just speculation.

Two killed in gun attack on oil exploration company's vehicle in Gwadar

Militants attacked a vehicle of an oil exploration company and killed two of its security guards in Balochistan's Gwadar district on Saturday.

Mansoor Gichki, a senior administration officer, told DawnNews that armed militants opened fire at the vehicle of a private oil exploration company in Pasni tehsil of Gwadar.

He said two private security men guarding the officials of the company were killed on the spot. The assailants escaped unhurt from the spot

"The private oil exploration company was engaged in conducting survey of the area when the vehicle of the company was attacked by miscreants," he added.

Levies and police personnel reached the incident site as an investigation into the incident went underway.

"The incident seems to be an act of targeted killing," Gichki said.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Militants in the area have been attacking security forces and pro-government politicians for more than a decade.

Very sad news... undermines CPEC and everything else.

I had high hopes for this oil and gas exploration...

Usually oil can be found from seabed.

At least, the land is connected to the Arabic peninsula, oil can flow around. :)

Baluchistan is full of mineral resources. In one particular location in Reko Diq we have a mine full of gold and copper worth $500 billion. Trust me this province along with KPK could make Pakistan the mineral hub of Asia if not the entire world. According to Dr Samakand Mubarak (nuclear scientists) there is a mine in North Waziristan which is said to be twice as large as Reko Diq. I know for a fact that Nephrite Jade does exists in large quantities in the Northern Areas which sells like hot cakes in China if the quality is good. Only problem is you need the correct mining equipment and training to extract it.

''Seismic survey for oil/ gas exploration''
I see a technical disconnect there!

this estimate was given by Canadian company when the price of gold was around 500 usd per ounce... These days the price of Gold is around 1200usd (usually around 1300 usd). It had even reached the peak of 1800usd couple of years ago but 1300usd is quite a stable price these days

do the calculations by yourself

How so? Fist step is usually aerial topography review to hypothesize on the subsurface formations, second is seismic surveys to assess any potential traps, and third are the more costly exploratory wells for core analysis for actual hydrocarbon potential.

So seismic survey for oil and gas is the correct terminology.

Sorry oil doesn't flow around in reservoirs subsurface. If it did, it would have migrated to surface and would have vanished thousands of years ago. It's not swimming pool of oil and gas down there. But if you mean the probably of finding oil and van reservoirs are high because they share a similar formation forming or plate tectonics over geological timescale... then the odds are better.

Explain your 'potential trap' a bit more... is it an oil/gas terminology?
Never heard of that before, only relation i can recall of seismic surveys, is for construction reasons.

Think of the subsurface rocks as a layered cake. Each layer of cake has different characteristics. On a seismic survey plot you would how these layers form for potential traps. Without getting too technical go here and read the traps part:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petroleum_reservoir
Ultimately you are hoping that you have a cap rock. A rock with very little permeability (ability to allow flow of fluids). You need a cap rock there which has prevented the flow upwards (because fluids under pressure below have a natural tendency to flow towards the surface)... therefore a cap rock has ensured that the oil and gas hasn't been "lost" over the millions of years.

Now what i have said above is good for all the conventional oil and gas (meaning what we commonly thing of as a oil and gas reservoir/pool)... unconventional is a whole different thing...it is tighter rock not commonly thought as a reservoir that has no cap rock above... like shale rocks which require fracturing.

I Can Tell You A Few More Things To Be Excited About

1) The reserves in Reko Dik containing gold and copper are huge. This was authenticated by a Canadian company and the project was halted by the Supreme court.
2) Dr Samankand Mubarak is a high respected man, therefore I would believe his viewpoint that South/North Waziristan is rich in mineral resources.
3) Mubashir Luqman on his show made the allegation that Pakistan has six trillion barrels of oil...I never heard any other Pakistani scientists make such a claim...so the figure is false.
4) In regards to Nephrite Jade I know Pakistan has a significant quantity because I been close to the mine and have tested the material in London Hatton Garden. Some smart Chinese people have gone up their and purchased it from the locals and they are now selling it in Xian. Pakistani Nephrite Jade will face stiff resistance from Russian and Hotan Jade, however, someone in Pakistan just needs to market the rock correctly..
5) Do you know what Pakistan's people is in the gem industry?

Mubashir Luqman Did Not Exactly Say Six Trillion Barrel But Said That There Is An Extremely Large Oil Field Offshore Karachi And It Is Due To Increase In Pakistan Offshore EEZ(Which Has Now Happened). The Report of 6 Trillion Barrels Was Made By GSP.It Was Reported In Multiple Sources Incl. Carnegie

I would take the numbers with a grain of salt. Can you provide me the link of the actual scientific report because I can't find it online. Pakistan does have a large reserve of shale oil. Besides the future of oil looks bleak. Things like lithium will make big bucks for Pakistan.
