Children in a Nagpur school observe 2-minutes of silence in solidarity with the victims of the Peshawar attack.

  • NEW DELHI: he Centre has asked all states to step up security, particularly in schools and colleges, after Tuesday's massive terror attack at a Pakistan school in which 132 children were killed. (Peshawar School Attack: Track LIVE updates here)

"An advisory has been issued to the state governments," Home Minister Rajnath Singh told reporters outside Parliament House when asked what steps the government is taking to ensure security of schools in the country.

Press Trust of India or PTI has quoted officials in the Home Ministry as saying that guidelines are being issued to schools which will include preparing an escape plan for children in case of a terror attack, how to prevent hostage situations and how to raise an alarm and shut doors and gates in case of an emergency.

"The earlier advisory was issued by the Home Ministry in 2010 to prominent schools and institutions after 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused David Coleman Headley was arrested in the US. We will revisit the advisory and send it afresh considering the present situation," PTI quoted a Home Ministry official said.

Officials said some schools would be given special instructions separately and they would be asked to coordinate with the local police and administration for security drills. These include some top schools in Delhi and Mumbai and some residential schools in other states.

In Delhi, police officials have reviewed security arrangements for large schools. The Delhi Police said they would immediately increase patrolling outside schools, especially what they called "high-profile schools."

Senior police officers said cops at local police stations would also be in touch with school principals to reassure them on security.

Sad that we live in such times where this is necessary but good to see such precautions being taken...

It is good to learn certain contingencies at school age..

Everyone should learn something regarding fire emergencies, national emergencies. It will come in handy .

We are too vulnerable ... unless such elements aren't taken care of pro actively we will be left counting our dead and crying over their dead bodies. Every little fcuker who even shows an inch of inclinations towards any such groups fcuk his human rights in the rear and put a bullet in the head.

Thinking about todays kids who are going to school.. Instead of practicing football or cricket, they are practicing mock drill to escape from terrorist attacks.. What a world we are living in?
The world has always been this way. In fact, arguably the world is a lot more peaceful today than in the past. During the cold war, children in many countries were taught what to do in the event of a nuclear attack. In the US, there was a nursery rhyme that taught that to children - I think it was called "duck...and cover".

If you go even further back in time, the world was a nastier place. There were no Geneva conventions or rules of war. Cities, even entire countries used to be plundered and ravaged. Heck, our own Delhi has seen violence that would make yesterday's attack seem like a trivial affair. Back in the bad old days, the norm was to annihilate and burn down conquered places. Count Vlad III (later fictionalized as Dracula) impaled over 30,000 muslim Turks in one night alone.

Well it is always good to have some sort of safety measures in placed in case of any tragedy.

Gun control in India...our only saving grace!

Imagine the anarchy without it!

I shudder the day ... when the majority would loose it and go on rampage if such thing happens in India and some Mullah tried to justify it. Enough lunatics here to put more fuel to the fire. It'll be bloody massacare.

Oh god...Godhra riots would be like a storm in a teacup compared to what could happen with free flow of guns!

May the "Ghoda" always remain in the stable!
