Saudi skies are now open to flights to Israel

For the first time ever, an international airline can use Saudi airspace to fly to Israel.

Air India is launching a new flight from New Delhi to Tel Aviv, starting on March 22, and has been given permission to use the skies over Saudi Arabia, an Air India spokesperson told CNN.

Israel and Saudi Arabia have never had official diplomatic relations, and interactions between their governments have taken place only through back channels.

But the historic animosity has given way to cautious, if often denied, cooperation based on a shared enmity towards Iran.

The permission for Air India to fly over Saudi Arabia will likely be seen as a major breakthrough, cutting hours off direct flights between India and Israel.

But it has upset Israel's national carrier, El Al, which has to fly around the Arabian peninsula to India. Its Tel Aviv-Mumbai flight takes eight hours. By comparison, Air India's three flights a week between the Indian capital and Tel Aviv -- a longer flight by distance -- will take only seven hours.

El Al slammed what it termed a "discriminatory" move by Saudi authorities, in a letter to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) this week.

"Air India will gain a significant and unfair advantage over El Al with respect to flights between Israel and India," CEO Gonen Usishkin said in the letter.

He demanded that the ICAO help "procure equal permission for El Al to fly above Saudi Arabia."

Israel and India have seen a surge in cooperation under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Netanyahu recently visited India, complimenting Modi's visit to Israel, where the two hailed warming ties between the tiny Jewish state and the world's fastest growing major economy.

Saudi and Israeli aviation authorities did not respond to requests for comment.

-- CNN's Oren Liebermann, Sugam Pokharel and Zahraa Alkhalisi contributed to this article.

-- Correction: An earlier version of this article gave an incorrect title for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Muslim Air Force must begin combat air patrols over Muslim skies and prevent Indian planes flying over Muslim lands of Arabia. It is all upto Pakistan Air Force to stop this and inshallah it will do what needs doiing. We also ask Gen. Raheel Sharif to stop this Zionist plot and secure the holy land.

what is wrong in allowing airplanes flying over SA to Israel? I mean,is it not a regular thing?

No. This is Muslim air.

Since when did you even started trolling?? I thought you are a sensible member...Even with so much of hostility, India and Pakistan airspace is used by one another..So what is the big deal with using airspace...Again, usage or airspace is for civilian use only..

God move... Peace with Israel makes sense and is the only way to also further the Palestinian cause...

Clutch , didn't we have these arguments on Pakistani site many years back?
You are asking to capitulate to thieves. No way! Robbery by force of arms is violation of international law. No peace until all piece of Palestine is returned.

Saudi Writer and political analyst Abdul Rahman al-Turayri said the Indian Airways spokesman had modified his statement and said he had asked for approval from the Saudi authorities, which did not give approval.

Al-Turayri said that it is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who had made this claim, and this has been repeated before, and the Saudi Civil Aviation Authority denied.

He pointed out that the Saudi position has been consistent since 2002 not to normalize with Israel before the solution of the Palestinian issue, but what is happening is a media policy pursued by Israel while Saudi policy is fixed against Iran and for the Palestinian cause.

On the response that could be against the statements, al-Turayi said that the Civil Aviation Authority is the one authorized to respond because it is a fixed and clear policy that not a single plane has passed through Saudi airspace in the direction of Israel, and that this matter will change only after the declaration of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, and then the flights can be considered.

:) Probably...

I think peace with Israel should be tied to a solution to the Palestinian cause.

Israel will negotiate and work out a deal in order to get recognition and peace from all Muslim nations.

To have illusion that the Palestinians will only get a homeland after the defeat or destruction of Israel is a foolish endeavor which ultimately hurts the Palestinian more than the Israelis.

For Pakistan it is a win win too... Ultimately our real enemy is India .. not Israel ...

2003-2007? Wow thats almost a decade ago. You have toned down your rhetoric, I guess we all mellow/mature with age! I hope you have changed for the better in time. It's never too late, accept what is right and confess your digressions!

Back to the Palestinian issue, all illusions were shattered when a force of 3000 Hezbollah soldiers defeated the Israeli army in the last Lebanon war. The world is a dynamic place , peaceful people will only tolerate injustice to a certain extent before they overthrow the oppressors and that is a historical fact.

This is the message to our youth:-

By the way Muslims land and air space is already used by the non Muslims to attack on Muslims countries. And Saudi will do everything for their power they don't care for the so called Ummah. We the people of poor countries and Arab's slaves use this term to satisfy our desire.
