Saudi sex braggart gets 5 years, 1,000 lashes

By Mohammed Jamjoom

(CNN) -- A Saudi court on Wednesday sentenced a man who caused uproar by bragging about his sex life on television to five years in prison and 1,000 lashes, according to Ministry of Information officials.
Mazen Abdul Jawad talked openly about his sex life on the controversial show.

Mazen Abdul Jawad, a 32-year-old airline employee and divorced father of four, spoke openly about his sexual escapades, his love of sex and losing his virginity at age 14. He made the comments on Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation, which aired the interview a few months ago.

Saudi authorities shut down LBC offices in Jeddah and Riyadh after airing the interview on an episode of its popular show "A Thick Red Line." Abdul Jawad was arrested shortly after the program aired and charged with violating Saudi Arabia's crime of publicizing vice.

On the program, Abdul Jawad is also shown in his bedroom, where he holds sexual aids up to the camera. The episode ends with him cruising the streets of Jeddah in his car looking for women.

The episode caused an uproar in deeply conservative Saudi Arabia, where sharia, or Islamic law, is practiced. Pre-marital sex is illegal, and unrelated men and women are not permitted to mingle.

The segment in question has been posted on the video-sharing site YouTube since its initial broadcast last month, and has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.

Speaking about promiscuous acts "is a violation of the sharia regulations on the one hand and against Saudi customs on the other," police spokesman Suleiman Al-Mutawae told Arab News, an English-language daily newspaper in Saudi Arabia.

Before Jawad's detention, Arab News reported that he initiated a damage-control campaign, apologized for his comments and was considering filing a complaint against the show's producers for presenting him "in the worst possible manner by taking two hours of footage and condensing it down to a minutes-long segment."

Jawad's lawyer could not be reached for comment. The ministry officials spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity.

Does anyone know whether a person can really be lashed 1,000 times and survive? Are the "lashes" just baby taps?

Lovely. Let Jerry Springer run on your TV and have your children fcuk your neighbors in two months time. Sexual sins and experiences are the only sins which it is prohibited to discuss in public because it is something that you cannot and can never "solve" and "prevent" by discussion. The more you discuss it, the more minds you pollute around.

I am personally in the favor of slashes against imprisonment and monetary penalties because even Rich (who doesn't bother paying any cash amount and dont feel penalized) would remember for what they god punished. Its the beauty of Islamic laws that people in Saudia Arabia leave their shops full of Gold, Jewelery and valuable goods open even when they are out for prayer. People who are eager to criticize must visit the country to know if these punishments have good or bad effect on the country and Nation as a whole.

Western Laws tend to be kind and sympathetic towards individuals, even if they make crimes, but Islamic Laws focus the society and not only punish the criminals, but leave a lesson for the rest who hasn't committed it.

just one question brother...

do you claim that you have never lied or stolen a thing or have never seen something bad happen and done nothing to stop it in your life?

you approve of it???

Good question.

The lashes are not like the ones you see on Hollywood.

I heard Zakir Naik say that the upper arm must remain by ones side and motionless so that only the forearm is free to yeald the lashes; moving in a vertical direction.

Try doing it yourself in the air and you'll see how little force you can muster.

No - beacsue no such thing exists in Qur'an or Sunnah.

The reason why Islam is strict on promiscuous acts is beacsue, if allowed to persist, can degrade the society at large.

Let's see now if Mr Jawad would ever dare to talk about S. E . X ever in his life.

Please learn some more before criticizing penalties in Islam. First thing, lie is never a physically punishable sin/crime although it is called mother of all sins but still penalty for it is not physical.

Coming to stealing, yes I have stolen things when I was kid and I still can steal even when I am adult if I would know there is no penalty of doing so. If somebody steals, his LEFT Hand is cut off and this is not only a penalty for him but for the others to learn a lesson and refrain from doing so again. So as long as he is alive, he is living lesson for society. If I had seen few people or even my own hand would've been cut off, I would never dare to commit that even as a kid.

Eyes are never popped out, never. I would insist that if you want to hate Islam, at lest learn it so you could hate it better.. And if you want to see whether Islamic Punishments work or not, then visit Saudia Arab for a day and see what is level of social justice in the country and how much safe their nationals feels.

Just to put another thoght in your mind, Islam doesn't do injustice with any one. Islamic Punishments are severe but Instant. If you did something wrong, get your 10,100 slashes and go home, earn your bread and support your family. In Islam, people are not kept in jails for 10s of year in which prisoner looses his productivity as a citizen and for those 10 years there is no care-taker of his home, wife, children and dependents. Even cutting the head is the least painful way of killing somebody because moment one's spinal cord is cut, he doesn't feel pain and dies in the shortest possible time.

I would encourage you to study some, even if you are not interested in adopting or converting but for the sake of hating or criticizing it. I am sure the more you learn, the more you would agree that these penalties are better, not only for the one who receives them but for the society as a whole.

.
But unfortunately despite the tough laws these sins continue to grow in Saudia Arabia. Especially forighners become victim to this kind of treatement . I have stayed in saudia arabia for alomost three years and believe me every thing happens there underground. Prostitution , Night Clubs just like those of Beirut every thing is there in Saudi Society However not on a large scale and so openly as in other modest Arab countries .

sir, on criticism...??? first things first... i just asked you asked you a question.
did it hurt so much??? why are you inventing the share of thoughts about me criticizing islam???
before saying anything else lemme tell you sir, believer or not... my culture endows me to respect others thoughts, ideas and beliefs whether or not i myself agree with them or not... for i understand that world is diverse with people who have varied beliefs and in which no one can claim that he alone is correct while all others are all wrong.

when i asked you that you never lied... you say there is no physical punishment for it... okay!

when i asked you if you have ever stolen things you come up with an excuse that "You wont do it had you seen that hand chopped off a person who ever committed it or had your own hand been chopped off you wont do it"... what a pity sir! you know what is correct and what is wrong... yet you are not in a position to choose the right and instead want an example set... you rest the onus of a just society not on making the people just and responsible but by passing the buck on state to make an example of the defaulters???

and that is beauty of our system sir... we give a chance to person to reform... we imprison him so that he learns... in our system which incidentally is your system as well we respect life and take caution before taking it or harming it...

and stop giving me the examples of saudi arab... you yourself given an option wont migrate to that country ... and dont get me started on the personal liberties and freedom that you are in a position to enjoy and make comments about (i woudnt have stolen had i saw someones hand chopped off) while people in saudi cant even think of it...

The question is who decided that the punishment for promiscuity and sexual escapades is a 1000 lashes???
Did Allah or Bhagwan come down and allocate these punishments??

In fact who even said that its a sin??

I mean the almighty Allah gave all of us a sexual drive....and its human nature to procreate.....
Man was not made to be monogomous and its almost unnatural and goes against all laws of nature.......Where a man is supposed to spread his seed and reproduce to ensure survival...Afterall, we are nothing but animals at the end of the day!!!

I can completely fall in line with punishments for Adultery, stealing, drugs etc (I do think they're a bit harsh in Saudi)......since these actually harm people, physically, mentally or materially....

But the above news is just plain disturbing......

BTW....can someone help me understand.....Sharia...is that something that the Prophet initiated or was that an element of Islamic society past the Prophet??
