Just confirmed by WAS on twitter. Saudi intelligence carried out an operation against Al-Qaeda in Yemen and free Saudi abducted Council in Yemen from Al-Qaeda using Special Forces, no casualties of any of the special forces guys.

UPDATE 1-Saudi consul released after three years as hostage in Yemen

A Saudi Arabian diplomat returned to Riyadh on Monday after being released by kidnappers in Yemen where he spent three years as a hostage, the kingdom's Interior Ministry said in a statement carried by state media.

Abdullah al-Khalidi, Saudi consul in Aden, was seized in March 2012 and later appeared as a hostage in videos released by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) calling on Riyadh to do more to free him.

The Interior Ministry did not say in its brief statement how Khalidi came to be released, except that it was a result of "intensive efforts" made by the kingdom's intelligence agency.

AQAP and its parent organisation al Qaeda have sworn to bring down the Saudi state and Riyadh has worked closely with the United States to undermine the groups' operations in Yemen by sharing intelligence, diplomats have said.

Saudi Arabia, Yemen's most powerful neighbour, fears that growing instability there might give more space for AQAP to operate and launch more operations like a cross-border raid it carried out in August in which eight people were killed.

Apparently it was a big operation from what I am reading in Arabic sources where Blackhawks and Apaches were used deeps inside South Yemen territory as well as a military Land convoy inside Yemen that decimated the AQ stronghold in Yemen.

Saudi consul in Aden arrives home

An official source at the Interior Ministry said that as a result of intensive efforts made by the presidency of the General Intelligence, Saudi consul in Aden Abdullah Mohammed Khalifa al-Khalidi has arrived home safely. He was kidnapped in front of his home in the district of Mansoura in Aden while he was on his way to his office in the morning of Wednesday, 05.05.1433 AH corresponding to March 28, 2012 G.

He was handed later in a suspicious transaction to the elements of the deviant group which held him forcibly in flagrant violation of Islamic and Arab principles and morality as well as provisions of humanitarian covenants that govern and protect his rights as a diplomat whose work is limited to facilitating dealings of the citizens of the host country to get entry visas into the Kingdom for Hajj, Umrah, work and visit of family and relatives and others. He will undergo medical tests and be reunited with his family.

Announcing this, the Interior Ministry confirms that the state will spare no effort in maintaining its citizens and ensuring their safety wherever they are

Great news and encouraging. Conducting such operations in Yemen of all places is a sign of quality. Especially given the terrain, chaotic situation and danger of AQAP.

It is 100 times more difficult to combat AQAP than ISIS which operates in flat terrain. Yemen is a smaller version of Afghanistan in comparison.

He was not released, an operation took place, similar to the one that rescued President Hadi in Yemen from captivity and into Aden.
