Saudi Grand Mufti authorizes marriage to 10-yr-old girls

The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah, or on formal occasions, Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Lateef Aal ash-Shaikh, has given the official thumbs-up for Muslim men to marry girls as young as 10.

According to the Australian news portal The World Observer, the Grand Mufti also criticized those who desire to raise the minimum age of marriage to 25.

While lecturing at Imam Mohamed bin Saud Islamic University in the Saudi capitol of Riyadh, the Sheikh stated:


"Those who call for raising the age of marriage to 25 are absolutely mistaken.

"Our mothers and grandmothers got married when they were barely 12.

Good upbringing makes a girl ready to perform all marital duties at that age"

According to Islamic expert Raymond Ibrahim, the clout wielded by the Grand Mufti is considerable:


"He is the Grand Mufti of the nation that brought Islam to the world.

Moreover, he is the President of the Supreme Council of Ulema [Islamic scholars] and Chairman of the Standing Committee for Scientific Research and Issuing of Fatwas.

Accordingly, when it comes to what Islam teaches, his words are immensely authoritative."

The Quran clearly says it is forbidden to marry someone until they have attained "sound judgment". Now we all know through common sense that no person has "sound judgment" AT LEAST until he/she has completed puberty, which is 16-18.

These so-called Muftis should not have any authority. Saudi Arabia should be a secular state with no religious bigotry just like Turkey, Russia and western Europe. Wahabism should be banned and wiped out at once. Imagine the shame this so-called Mufti bought to worldwide Muslims with this "fatwa".

10 year old mothers make it to the news in US because they are still a rarity. Can you say the same for Pakistan ? My mom ( who used to teach in a Pakistani ) school had to deal with parents who wanted take their 13 yr old, 15 yr old daughters back to Pakistan for marriage. I remember she used to come back home so frustrated and shaking with rage whenever she had to recall encounters with such parents.

underage mothers usually give birth to underweight babies

this babies are more prone to health problems
