RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia has granted $1 billion in aid to Lebanese armed forces, state news agency SPA said, as they battle Islamist militants who seized a border town in the worst spillover yet from Syria's three-year-old civil war.
At least 17 Lebanese soldiers have been killed and 22 are missing in the last five days of violence in and around the town of Arsal. The two sides agreed a 24-hour ceasefire on Tuesday [ID:nL6N0QB2HZ].

Former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri, who has close links to the Saudi royal family, announced the aid after visiting King Abdullah on Tuesday evening, SPA said.

The aid would help Lebanese armed forces "maintain the security and stability of Saudi Arabia's sister country, Lebanon," Hariri was quoted by the Saudi agency as saying.

Lebanon, which is still trying to rebuild after its own 1975-1990 civil war, has been buffeted by violence linked to the Syrian conflict, including rocket attacks, suicide bombings and gun battles.

But the assault on Arsal was the first major incursion into Lebanon by Sunni militants who officials have identified as hardliners belonging to the Nusra Front, al Qaeda's branch in Syria, and Islamic State, which has seized large areas of Iraq and Syria. [ID:L6N0QA1XP]

Lebanon has officially tried to distance itself from Syria's conflict, but the country's powerful Shi'ite movement Hezbollah has sent fighters to aid President Bashar al-Assad, an Alawite. Assad, like Hezbollah, is backed by Shi'ite power Iran.

The rebels fighting to overthrow Assad are overwhelmingly Sunni and have received support from regional Sunni powers including Saudi Arabia.

While Saudi Arabia is a leading supporter of the Syrian insurgency, it says it backs moderate rebels and shuns hardline Islamist militants. The kingdom fears the conflict could reinvigorate a threat from militants within its own borders.

misleading title, and unverified image at the bottom.

Is the aid on top of the $3 billion military aid they gave earlier?

@islamrules

Remember that modern day Arab states, most of them are there to secure their rule and nothing else. Which is why they persecute anything to do with political Islam and support Israel due to that policy. They never do anything beneficial to the people when it comes to foreign policy these days. Everything they do actually effects the people and only serves the leaders.

I read an report earlier of Saudi Arabia using NSA like methods on their citizens.

Supporting the Lebanese army whose sole job is to keep Lebanon peaceful and prevent conflict = killing Sunni Muslims.

Why is it that every Tom and Dick blames KSA's leadership for everything? It's getting pathetic. Even if they did everything as they should people would complain.

Now tell me @islamrules who has been more supportive of the Sunni Muslim community in Lebanon than KSA?

@Halimi as the only Lebanese on this forum then what is your comment about such news?

I want to hear your opinion.

Is the aid on top of the $3 billion military aid they gave earlier?

There has only been this aid.

Personally I am against all that foreign aid when KSA has problems of its own but what can we normal people do?

Yeah you're right. The $3 billion was a grant. I guess that means they choose when to spend it from it when they need to, in return for supporting Saudi interests in Lebanon. They did the same in Egypt with Sisi.

Do you know what these interests are in Egypt/Lebanon?

I personally favor stability in Lebanon just to clarify.

What has this to do with anything? This happened before the donation arrived and last time I checked it is Hezbollah that has been targeting Sunni Muslims. Why don't you criticize the country that supports and founds them?

Whatever the Lebanese army does has nothing to do with KSA. Do you really think that KSA told the Lebanese army to target Sunni Muslims deliberately? That civilians. What a joke.

I am not stubborn. Look, I don't think that everything that our leaders are doing is good. In fact I am also very often critical. But this is ridiculous.

You know very well who has been killing Sunni Muslims in Lebanon and Syria and which countries have supported groups that do such a thing and regimes.

If the Lebanese army is shelling civilians deliberately then I renounce that.

Why do you speak to me like I have some power? I don't.

Disgraceful OP.Terrorists(al nusra) moved into a Lebanese town and the Lebanese Army stepped in.That's what national armies do btw-protect the country.

All funds must be monitored............believe me if KSA provided lebnon anything..... each and every penny will be accounted and monitored by international org's....hizbullshaitan has more foes than frnds.

Not much can be relied on lebanese forces

Not surprising: Vid shows Lebanon Army allowing Hezbollah convoy to pass through checkpts freely en route to Arsal

This is because the Lebanese army is weak. If the Lebanese army was strong there would be no Hezbollah as no country would accept some militia to control a whole region of their own country.

I guess this is the interest in terms of supporting the Lebanese army aside from keeping calm. Strong army = bigger chances of calmness.

We (GCC) equip all the Lebanese army because we love tenderly, with passion, ‘Hezboshitan, Assad and Iran’ as they like us - Sunni Arab -. :butcher:

Who cares about your opinion. You have a problem ?

Why don't you support the Palestinians with arms? Oh you do, you support the PA security forces to prevent any Palestinians from being able to arm in the West Bank to defend their people from an occupation.

Keep things in perspective guys.....the fundamental problem lies with Lebanon and Lebanese only....whilst the situation is being exploited by Iran and KSA respectively.

We all know Iran supports its allies in like Hezbollah so naturally...therefore KSA is doing what its doing.

PS. Idiotic title.

.
Saudi policy towards the military is right: buy influence with cash handouts and have supplies in Saudi hands. That will wean the country off Hezbollah's influence and undermine the group's military primacy in the country.

The alternative is fragmentation of the military along sectarian lines (because of HA's dominance of it) at the expense of the Sunnis. And, by implication, a civil war not unlike what's happening in Syria.
