Lucknow: Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan has appealed to the United Nations to intervene and keep a close watch on what is happening in Ayodhya. He has said that the kind of frenzy being whipped up right now can lead to a 1992-like situation in Ayodhya again. The leader said that though the UN is a puppet of the United States he has still written a letter to the body to take note of the current crisis in Ayodhya.
The leader further said that the BJP and the RSS want to convert India into a Hindu Rashtra. Khan also questioned the security arrangements made by the UP government and said that in spite of heavy police presence in Ayodhya in 1992 the Babri Masjid was still destroyed by the kar sevaks.
In 1992, over 150,000 VHP and BJP kar sevaks were present at the site of the disputed structure and were raising slogans. A police cordon had been placed around the structure to protect it from the attack, however, in the afternoon, a young man carrying a saffron flag managed to slip past the cordon. This was seen as a signal and soon the crowd broke the cordon and attacked the Babri Masjid with hammers, iron rods and axes. The cops who were outnumbered did nothing to protect the mosque and in few hours it was razed to the ground.
It should also be noted that after the destruction of the mosque the Pakistani government summoned the Indian ambassador to lodge a formal complaint, and also promised to appeal to the United Nations and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to build up pressure on the Indian government to protect the rights of minorities in the country.
