To be fair sir the article isn't clear who he saved first and it really is impossible for us to judge his actions in hindsight. It looks as if he gave up his own life for the sake of two strangers.... to criticise him in any way whatsoever seems rather needless to me.

I agree, but however we need to clarify this event to make sure of some things which would be appropriate if we talk now. But I think we'll see it a few days later. But better not to talk about that hence maybe he's alive and in need of help, hopefully.

. .
Looks bad.. but full credit to the sailor, very brave indeed.

.
Brave Soldier, may he be safe.
and WTH is wrong with the woman?

Please keep updating us about the incident. Although it is highly unlikely, I hope sailor survives.

RIP brave heart...

This was a suicide attempt by that lady, and local news papers reported, she had some issue and she wanted to suicide by jumping from this bridge, This bridge right next to naval base and CSL....Navy use this channel for training their cadets......

Very very unlikely, because this happened in middle of the city and if he survived he would have been saved by now....

KOCHI: A brave young sailor of the Indian Navy on Friday saved the life of a 35-year-old woman, who jumped into the backwaters from the Venduruthy bridge with her seven-month-old child, but went missing in the process because of heavy currents. The child was later declared dead at a private hospital.

The search for Vishnu, a native of Palakkad, was on when this report was being filed. According to police sources, sailor Vishnu Unni, a 24-year-old sailor with Sea 1, of INS Sharda, jumped into the waters after witnessing the suicide attempt made by the woman, identified by the police as Sangeetha. Though Vishnu was successful in pulling the woman and the child into a Cochin Shipyard rescue boat, he was unable to reach himself to the life buoy thrown to him.

Harbour police station SI Sabu P K said Vishnu was on his way to the Naval Base from Thevara on his bike with a friend when he witnessed the incident. He stopped the bike and jumped off the bridge without sparing a moment. A rescue operation with the help of divers was soon launched.

A Navy spokesperson said a special team with assistance from fast interceptor craft has been deployed for this purpose. Two vessels of the coastal police are also engaged in the search operation.

Vishnu was undergoing training at INS Dronacharya.

The body of 7-month-old child Vishnupriya was later shifted to Ernakulam General Hospital and was handed over to relatives.

The condition of the mother is stable now, police sources said.

Police officials have recovered the suicide note written by the woman.

“In the suicide note, she has not mentioned the name of any person. The note stated that after giving birth to the child, she was experiencing severe depression and hence decided to commit suicide,” a police official said.

A case of unnatural death has been registered.

Whilst I hope for the best for the sailor it really doesn't look good when they start deploying divers.

As for the woman, like I said it is unfair to judge her. She could very well have had postnatal depression and that sort of stuff makes people act like they would never have thought possible. Tragic tragic news that two lives have been lost here and one of them never even had a chance to see the world.

There are reports about her.. She attempted two months ago.. It seems she got suicidal tendency.. Whatever reasons she got.. She should fight instead of this coward act... Again I repeat this.. She don't have right to take life of another one... even that infant is her son or daughter...

RIP brave heart...
