I think that's just propaganda. They may well be taking heavy losses, but it's to be expected - they're fighting a trained, armed, professional army.

Putin launches a nuclear first strike, Ukraine would be the last thing he would think about.

and Putin knows that

he is many things, but being stupid and committing National Suicide is not one of them

It is a matter of existence for Russia.

Even in negotiations, Russia will not back down. It may accept some concessions but will not accept NATO Ukraine and a puppet Ukraine.

Besides it would come to nukes only if west interferes in the war and only WHEN Russias losses starts piling up. As of now Russia seems to be willing to accept losses to Ukraine as ; presumably its goals are worth more than these losses.

If Russia gives in then, it will lose all the confidence of its allies.

My guess is NATO will have to accept Russias request or get ready to face the Nukes in its back yard or in their own homes.

So if NATO does not intervene then it is just a matter of time for Russia to gain full control of Ukraine with losses.

not about pushing the buttons, eu and usa combined don't have what it takes to push someone like Putin or Xi let alone Putin & Xi against the wall. the aim of this nuclear forces alert was to send the european stock markets into a crashing nose dive.
