President Vladimir Putin has ordered snap military drills involving 150,000 personnel and hundreds of aircraft and naval vessels to ensure "security in Russia's southwest," the defense ministry said Friday.

"In accordance with the decision of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces snap exercises are being conducted by troops of the Southern and Western military districts," Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu was quoted as saying in a statement.

The drills involve nearly 150,000 personnel including airborne troops and marine infantry of the Northern and Pacific Fleets, the Russian warships take part in maneuvers in the Black Sea, Crimea, the defense ministry said.

The exercises also involve more than 400 aircraft and over 100 vessels and will be conducted in the Black and Caspian Seas, among other places.

The drills aim to test the Russian army's readiness to ensure "security in Russia's southwest where a serious threat of terrorism remains" as well as prepare for the Caucasus-2020 war games, the defense ministry said.

This week, the Russian media reported that a suspected terrorist cell was dismantled in the Rostov oblast in Russia's southwest. The group of six allegedly pledged loyalty the Islamic State terrorist group and was planning to attacks schools and police officers.

On July 7, another suspected attack was allegedly thwarted in the southern city of Astrakhan, where a local resident, also, allegedly, an ISIS sympathizer, was plotting an attack on an administrative building.

I wonder why NATO forces have never organized huge snap military exercices similar to Russian ones to test the readiness of the alliance ?

Because it's illogical. NATO does exercises in battle groups, like the recent navy ones etc. Those make more sense as in war the whole military of NATO won't be acting as one big strike force - instead each battle group will have specific missions.

What Russia is doing here is absolute Idiocracy in military terms, it's a show of power, and knowing Putin he thinks this is impressive. It's not.

They started to do this kind of things in 2013 (since the soviet era):

So maybe they have reasons that you dont know.

In a hypothetical war in which Russia were attacked, all would be decided in a matter of minutes (nuclear war). So they do right with that kind of drills.
