MOSCOW (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th August, 2018) Russia's Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet is much cheaper than its US analog F-35 aircraft, the president of the Russian United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), Yuri Slyusar, said.

"Only three countries, including Russia, possess the fifth-generation fighter jet. There is no exact information on China, but our Su-57s are much cheaper than the US F-35s," Slyusar told the Vedomosti newspaper in an interview.

Slyusar did not mention the price, but noted that it was impossible to compare Su-57 jet with aircraft of the previous generation, as the fifth-generation plane "is equipped with another set of systems with absolutely different functional capabilities."

In July, Russian lawmaker Vladimir Gutenev, a member of State Duma's expert panel on the aviation industry, told Sputnik that Su-57 will be two and a half times cheaper than F-35 fighter jet and F-22 stealth fighter aircraft.

According to open sources, F-22 jets cost $146.2 million, while F-35s may cost between $83 million and $108 million.

Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet, formerly known as Prospective Airborne Complex of Frontline Aviation (PAK FA), is a single-seat, twin-engine multirole "stealth" aircraft designed for air superiority and attack roles. It is equipped with an advanced avionics system and airborne active phased array radar as well as with a variety of high-precision weaponry. The jet carried out its maiden flight in 2010 and is still being tested by the military.

Even if it is, I think that Russia has somewhat admitted they don't have the funds to finish development and procure the system in relevant numbers any time soon. Thus, the whole point is moot imo, at least for the time being.

Russia spends like 5% of its GDP on military. They are not short on money I can tell you that.

Russia spend 4.2% of its GDP on military... they decline from $ 69.2billion in 2016 to $ 66.3 billion in 2018.. Russia dropped to 4th place in military spendings behind USA, China and Saudi Arabia.

by contrast Germany spends $ 44.2billion in 2017 which is only 1.2% of the GDP

Russia is 2nd place after Saudi Arabia in terms of military spending as % of GDP.

Saudi Arabia spends more of GDP on military BUT Saudi Arabia buys over priced western hardware. Russia on the other hands build everything in house, and doesn't spend money to other countries on military hardware. Russia labor cost is 15% of America labor cost. So Russia actually affords a lot of military hardware.

Kiribati can spend 100% of it's GDP on defense, still won't do jack shyte. What it matters is it's value in real dollar terms.

There is an order for 12 units, with first delivery planned for 2019 (rather optimistic). No other orders have passed legislation, and the program is on the back-burner, according to official Russian sources. The cancellation of the FGFA program was pretty severe for the project in general.

It is possible that the VVS is waiting for the izdeliye 30 project to come to a higher TRL before more orders are given.

The Sopwith Camel is much cheaper than both the Su-57 and the F-22. You get what you paid for.

If you want diamond, you can't buy it by paying for gold...

A plane in not a fifth gen jet just because of stealth... weapon and EW package should also have 5th gen capability...
