Russian Navy violates Swedish Territorial waters

Conductive materials such as water are not going to be an effective medium for an EMP. It's possible, but instead of the effects we think of in regards to land-based or air-born EMPs, effects such as the downing of electronics on a massive scale, an underwater EMP will dissipate too quickly and the energy cannot be focused as the water's conductivity will spread it in an amorphous pattern. It makes for good movie material, but in real life such a scenario is fiction.

Thanks for the clarification.

What about firing a device which could attach itself to the Russian submarine and fry it in an electrical eel type effect?

Subs tend to be equipped with dampening systems to suppress their sound signature, systems such as rubber or foam tiles, and the sub itself tends to be made of non-magnetic steel to avoid the threat of magnetically triggered mines, so an EMP bomb or mine or any other device used against a sub would have a difficult time being effective considering the subs are insulated from EMPs by the same materials that they use to lessen their sound signature and magnetic presence.

russia subs are quite old. I don´t wonder that this one got basicly beached. Will be interesting to see what happenes now. Go swedes and **** them up. Its ashaming enough already.

Maybe we will let it slip away, given the right incentive.
We did that to a West-German sub in the 1980s...
Took many years before that became known.

You never know what happens behind the scenes.

How strong is the swedish navy's asw capabilities?

We are lacking in Anti-Sub Helicopter capabilities. The old Boeing Vertols have been phased out,
and the replacement (NH90 = Hkp-14) has been delayed for years.
Last of the 18 on order will be delivered 2019, and until then, we will be somewhat limited.
The Army choose to buy Blackhawks (Hkp-16) when they got tired of waiting.

HMS Visby, which is shown in one of the pictures, is a modern stealth corvette,
with good capabilities for ASW.

And the Russians seem to be saying the submarine "could be" Dutch. (di.se - Ryssland: Ubåten kan vara holländsk Thats interesting. I was reading an article on yesterdays aftonbladet in which a former Swedish admiral was saying this Russian sub was probably spying on the Netherlands. I wonder what link the Netherlands has to all of this.

There was an exercise some days before this happened, where the Dutch Navy participated,
including one sub. According to the Dutch Navy, right now this sub is in Talinn on the other side of the Baltic Sea.
