At Army-2015, the first edition of the International Military-Technical Forum and Exhibition which was held near Moscow from the 16 to 19 June 2015, Russian defense industry has unveiled the Sprut-SDM1, a new modernized version of the 2S25 Sprut-SD, a self-propelled tank destroyer.

The new Russian-made Sprut-SDM-1 at Army-2015 defense exhibition near Moscow.

The Sprut-SD was designed to offer a new light tank for the Russian airborne troops able to destroy main battle tanks and armoured vehicles.

The 2S25 Sprut-SD is equipped with a two man turret armed with a 125 mm anti-tank gun. The gun is fitted with an autoloader, which ensures high rate of fire of 6-8 rounds per minute with both conventional projectiles and rounds with guided missiles

The first version of the 2S25 Sprut-SD was based on a chassis using the technology of BMD-3 / BMD-4airborne infantry armoured vehicle, the new version, the Sprut-SDM1 uses components of the BMD-4M chassis as well as the same engine.

The main armament of the Sprut-SDM1 is the same as the previous version, but the vehicle is fitted with a new fire control system and new panoramic sight mounted to the rear top side of the turret. The panoramic sight is similar to the system used on the T-90MS main battle tank. The gunner is equipped with anew firing sight with thermal channel and automatic tracking system.

The second armament of the Sprut-SDM-1 includes now a new remote weapon station armed with a 7.62mm machine gun mounted at the top left rear part of the turret.

According some Russian sources, the production of the new Sprut-SDM1 could be started in the beginning of 2018.

noice, these babies will be dropping from the air into Poland. SDM poops on the Stryker MGS.

better off road mobility. bigger gun. why is it so hard to design decent vehicles in the U.S

It is a universal baby. It can parachute, float on the water (and shooting while floating), shoot missiles through the main gun at a distance about 5 km. In day or night.

Interesting. So it is a versatile platform. I did not take that into account.

Looks like a really potent machine.

THx. Don't forget, it is also amphibious, much like the BMD-4M / BTR-MD, to which it is related (makes a good marine assault vehicle)

G'day mate;

Depending on which country you are asking for, it is useless for western doctrine, but standard and essential complement for Russian or similar doctrine.

In the west, mostly the United States, armoured warfare doctrine assume armoured vehicle would operate under air supremacy, which is a "you fly, you die" tactics employed by western air forces, western force would first established secure air corridor by launching prolonged air campaign prior to any invasion or operation, that air campaign would saturate enemy air defence and air force and render them ineffective to mount their own air defence to challenge the western allies air power.

After that is done, then the allies will consider using group troop accompanied by air asset (such as gunship and helicopter) and they would supplement the anti-armoured role for normal infantry or armoured column

Mobile Gun Platform (MGS) and Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) are closest to the Tank Destroyer as it can be in the west, but while both have anti-armoured capability, they are intended for infantry support, in a tank versus tank warfare, the west will fly their attack helicopter in first, identified and interdict the enemy armoured element, and then rush their own tanks in accompanied by mechanized infantry, which in turn protected by MGS and IFV.

In the soviet era and to a point now, Russian doctrine operate assuming local air superiority can be achieve, which means the Russian would have limited aerial cover in their immediate area of operation but those cover could be challenged or be used to challenge the enemy's own air superiority. In reality, Russian doctrine account for less than established air superiority or even assumed only operate in air parity as their best case scenario. Which would inhabit their ability to support ground force from the air.

That would means for a variety of support network have to be established by any ground force when they are deployed. Hence in a Russian tank army, you would see a mixed bag unit with tanks, IFV, AA/SAM battery, SP artillery and anti-armoured artillery in the same unit. While the US have a much more concentrate of artillery, tanks, IFV and attack helicopter .
