Russian Air force - Sukhoi Su-35

Has India rejected Su-35 only because they didn't want to depend entirely on Russia for the defence equipment or has this plane actually lost on capabilities ground?

It failed to meet certain requirements set by IAF but most importantly its the Super Sukhoi program in which new Sukhoi 30 MKI will have most of the technologies of Su-35. So why would we need another aircraft if we can have almost similar characteristics in our existing one.
