Russia shows interest in joining India to manufacture aircraft

NEW DELHI: Russia today evinced interest in joining hands with India to manufacture passenger and cargo aircraft.

During his talks with External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, visiting Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin expressed interest in establishing joint ventures for the purpose.

In its attempt at taking cooperation beyond military aviation, Russia had earlier offered co-production of passenger aircraft in India, including its 90-seater Sukhoi 100 Superjet.

India has also launched a project to design and manufacture its first indigenous 90-seater passenger aircraft. The work on the project, called the National Civilian Plane, is being undertaken at the National Aerospace Laboratory in Bangalore.

Russia's interest in joining hands with India in manufacturing passenger planes came up during Rogozin's discussion with Krishna at the meeting of the Indo-Russian Inter-Governmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation.

Nothing new, but highly interesting how Russias development and procurement policies are changing! The times when Russia developed all their stuff alone and for their own requirements are over, especially since they understood that they can't fund nor sell these things alone. Now they are co-developing stuff with Asians, Israelis (UAVs with IAI), or now even with Europeans (LUH with Agusta Westland, MPA based on the Be 200 with Alenia) and are happily buying foreign stuff for their forces too:

they will get fund and you tech and skills.

This was true in the past but these days many appreciate how far Indian defence industery has come and the fact that they can genuilny bring expertise and knowledge to the table and not just funds.

+ I think Russia should prove itself with MRTA first before looking to move in for more such projects. Right now MRTA is not heralding this idea as a good one.
