Russia says will sever ties with NATO if Ukraine joins Atlantic bloc: agency| Reuters

MOSCOW Wed Dec 24, 2014 5:13am EST

(Reuters) - Russia said on Wednesday it would respond adequately by severing ties with NATO if Ukraine becomes a member of the Atlantic bloc.

"If this decision in the future takes on a military character (the accession to NATO), then we will respond adequately. Then there will be a complete severing of ties with NATO, which will be practically impossible to repair," Deputy Defence Minister Anatoly Antonov was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.

Russia: NATO expansion will force Moscow to respond - Interfax| Reuters
MOSCOW Thu Dec 25, 2014 6:34am EST

(Reuters) - A spokesman for Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that NATO's expansion to the east would force Russia to take "adequate" measures in response, Interfax news agency reported.

The spokesman, Alexander Lukashevich, also said at a briefing that Russia was sure that Ukraine's "European-Atlantic tilt" would be unlikely to help Kiev solve its social and economic difficulties.

Lool seems Putins Russia is getting more and more paranoid everyday. So what are these actions Russia will take if Ukraine joins NATO? Supply its eastern Ukrainian separatists with more arms?
@Viet , @NiceGuy, @AgentOrange and other Vietnamese/Chinese pro russian members maybe you can help me reason with Moscow. Lool

Putin will challenge NATO on Ukarine issue. Its more like NATO is blowing hot air only. I can bet if NATO will still do nothing.

The SCO should have a new branch that counters NATO. Its current military co-operations isn't anywhere near to that of NATO. The US and EU fears about the rise of Russia (for the 2nd time) and that of China and if Russia falls, China will be next.

Ahahahah.... Shanghai cooperation being like NATO? Lool that's a joke right? :D Its just an anti terrorist organisation, nothing mor. And it will remain that way for a longgggg time. Since the two main players Moscow and Beijing have no intention of forming a military bloc together . they both have their reasons for that, if not they will have done it a long time ago. :D

Lool nothing like ww3 will ever happen again man. Simply because of MAD. Just little/minor little skirmishes/proxy wars fought in smaller countries, no direct wars between major powers. Economic warfare, cyber war, sanctions, manipulation of financial markets ec YES but nuclear all out war? Lool nope never. So get back into reality and be more realistic, then we can have a proper conversation. :D

As of now , we have already shown to Moscow who is the big boss of the world economy/financial market , reason their currency, economy is in duldrums (zero growth, predicted -4% growth rate for next year, which is really bad for a developing country/BRIC member). So Moscow is now acting irrationally, since its knows its still far less powerful than the west/U.S unlike its U.S.S.R heydays where it could stand on its own feet and seize lands from other countries with impunity (read from China, Japan, central Asian countries, eastern Europe countries etc). Give them U.S power and see if they will still be acting like the good humble guys. :chilli::D

Yes, RUssian economy has taken a setback but the problem is has Russian back off so far? Instead it seems to showing more resistance against EU. And Russia has show they are far from beaten yet.

They have not, not because Putin doesn't wants to per se, simply because he has his back against the wall. He can't seem to back down now since he will loose face/support in the eyes of his people, nor can he openly admit he is supporting his mercenaries/seperatist in eastern Ukraine since this will mean not just more severe sanctions, but also world condemnation, reason he doesn't openly acknowledge his support to his mercenaries/separatists.

I'm afraid his refusal to back down/concede a temporary retreat will only cost his country even more as the sanctions keeps biting/getting more and more pronounced. As I said Russia will fall even more in recession/decline than it otherwise will have been the case. So expect to see their economy plunging more into crsis/irrelevance (apart from their oil/gas of course:enjoy:). Don't ever rush to go head on with an adversary several leagues ahead of you. Bide your time and plan for a long game.

what ties do they currently have ? I know for years Russia was allowing transit/resupply and other logistical use of their air space for the war in Afghanistan, but that stopped a while ago when the Ukraine thing flared up, right ?

actually Russia have backed off since Dec 1.

Infact they ceased attacking Donestk Airport on 3rd Dec

If Russia keep on the pressure we would see the new front extend all the way from Eastern Ukraine to Crimea but the fact that we didnt suggested that Russia have backed off

USA should send their afghan talibans to ukarine to defend their country as so far Nato is only watching the show doing nothing. Ukarine people are getting killed is this is powerfull Nato? Slowly Russia will get all their soviet countries back and Nato will keep watching.

That's because Ukrainians finally stopped firing artillery at Donetsk from the airport. They lost the old terminal to NAF.
