Russia says no to technology transfer for Smerch rockets

While the Pinaka will not be developed further into a larger system, its success and the experience gained from the program has led the ARDE and its partner organizations, to launch a project to develop a long range MRL similar to the Smerch MLRS. A 7.2-metre rocket for the Pinaka MBRL, which can reach a distance of 120 km and carry a 250 kg payload will be developed. These new rockets can be fired in 44 seconds, have a maximum speed of mach 4.7, rise to an altitude of 40 km before hitting its target at mach 1.8 and can destroy an area of 3.9 km2. Integrating UAVs with the Pinaka is also in the pipeline, as DRDO intends to install guidance systems on these rockets to increase their accuracy. Sagem completed delivery of its Sigma 30 laser-gyro artillery navigation and pointing system to be equipped with the Pinaka multiple launch rocket system in June 2010.[16] The Sigma 30 artillery navigation and pointing system is designed for high-precision firing at short notice. Successful testing was conducted at the Chandipur Test Range in January 2013,[17] and another successful test of the Pinaka Mk II, which has range more than 55 km, was conducted on 20 December 2013.[18]

Did you quote Wikipedia lol .. Current range if your upgraded pinaka MBRL is around 55 km..

Pretty stupid of the Army to keep insisting for foreign-made arms over domestic alternatives. The Army really ought to end this ugly practice and move towards domestic Defence contractors(public and private alike), many of whom also have impressive tie-ups with foreign defence multinationals and can hence provide decent quality options for local production.

Indeed, Turkey also purchased Chinese technology. I just thought India as a country where developed various type of ballistic missiles, achieved development of artillery rockets years ago. That's why I am surprized a littile bit when I read ToT request of India in this field...
India don't copy or do reverse engg..... different between copying and making your own. Own things can be modify into better , copy product face difficulty.

I know most of the stuff is imported :)

So, i asked him about the indigenous stuff. I am more of a current affairs, history, social sciences, semi culture critic kind of guy. Not upto date with the weapon platforms and stuff.

Probably the Indian Space Research Organisation is right now the most competent Indian government organisation. Because surprisingly, they complete projects on time and have had successful launches lately.

Plenty of them.....broadly, there are some pretty good domestic offerings for artillery guns, small arms, LAPVs etc, not to forget a plethora of upgradation possibilities. I'm sure that it isn't difficult to develop an unguided version of some of the more complex missiles that we have already developed. The Prahaar readily comes to mind.

Given the limited induction of Smerch, I'm also skeptical about their effectiveness in theatre warfare.

As in example of a rocket artillery : The Pinaka and the Prahaar.

As in example of systems with similar destructive effect on target: The Pinaka, the Prahaar, the Glide bomb by DRDO.


You have to understand that for a commander, what matters is the effect the munition has on target. he couldn't care less if it comes from his rocket artillery or from a PGM from an aircraft or from the orbital battlecruiser.

But beyond that, the Smerch is a poor choice for targeting anything 70-90 km away because of its unguided munitions. The rocket artillery has traditionally been used for area destruction, usually employed for halting an enemy charge, for softening up enemy positions or for targeting massed forces.

I sincerely doubt there is any benefit of softening up enemy positions 60-80km behind enemy lines or for that matter the enemy would mass that deep behind their own lines. This leaves only supply bases and high value assets for the Smerch, a role where any commander would prefer guided systems.

Thus my summary that the Smerch is not effective at the ranges it can reach

I rather see it as the prime example of what would happen if the Govt insisted on self-sufficiency bowing to considerations of National Pride.

India could well have outsourced all her satellites and their launch vehicles had it not been for this reason. And look how well it has worked out over the years.

For all the efforts put in by a few Indian companies through securing JVs or outright aquisitions, how exactly has the Indian Army been receptive? Neither the slightest preference for homegrown or home-acquired tech nor insistence on local production.
